Die neue Corona-Impfung auf Basis von Virus-RNA ist ein großer Erfolg. In nur einem Jahr entwickelt, ist sie die bisher erste RNA-Impfung, die beim Menschen zugelassen wurde. Neben Hoffnung bringt die Impfung jedoch bei manchen auch Bedenken mit sich: Kann in einer so kurzen Zeit überhaupt ein sicherer Impfstoff hergestellt werden? Die Antwort ist: Es kann. Molekularbiologe Martin Moder, der seinen PhD am Forschungszentrum für Molekulare Medizin der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) absolviert hat, beleuchtet in der aktuellen Folge die Hintergründe von RNA-Impfungen, an denen schon seit über 25 Jahren geforscht wird. Er erklärt, warum die Größe von Versuchsgruppen beim Aufspüren von sogenannten Langzeitfolgen relevant ist, was in Phase vier nach der Zulassung einer Impfung passiert und was es mit der Sorge, die Virus-RNA aus der Corona-Impfung könnte sich in die eigene DNA einbauen, auf sich hat. Am Ende wirft er noch einen Blick auf die in Großbritannien aufgetretene SARS-CoV-2-Mutation und was man dazu zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt sagen kann.
