The whole EP was made in November, after a long long spell of creative inactivity and self doubt, along with the rest of the EP, in the space of a week or so. It was a reminder of how great it can feel to make music when you get the urgent feeling of needing to write something. Laurence Guy returns to Shall Not Fade with his much-anticipated third EP, adding to last year’s massively successful ‘The Sun Is Warm and Directly Above You’ and ‘Your Good Times Will Come’. The London-based producer has amassed a global audience of listeners, all united in their appreciation for his luscious, upbeat house music and an outstanding discography of releases via imprints like: Ninja Tune, Late Night Tales, Studio Barnhus and Mule Musique.

While still unmistakably Laurence Guy’s signature style of delicately constructed, sample-heavy dance music, this EP carries a sombre note, reflective of the confusing times in which it was made. The A-side’s ‘Love Theme For The Morning After’ maintains a positive and danceable atmosphere, an ode to the moments of clarity and contentment we grasp in the afterglow. Musically, it is an ecstatic build-up of chords that leave you breathless, with a rhythm that pulses as consistently as a heartbeat throughout.  
By comparison to this joyfully glittering track, the B-side deals with more difficult emotions. Throughout ‘Mutual Excitement’, barely distinguishable vocal samples overlap each other in a hazy clamour, whilst natural keys play a bittersweet melody, pondering the uncertainty of a new relationship. Guy says of the final track, ‘Certain (To A Certain Extent)’ “2020 was a hard year to be certain of anything, I found myself frozen in pretty much every decision I had to make”. The song, a stripped-back melody built from a low fidelity jazz sound palette, is not just an exploration of the sense of uncertainty 2020 gave us, but expresses Guy’s acceptance of living without certainty. This soothing message is at the core of the EP, managing to create a sense of hope during an unsettled time.

Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.” 

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

With 10 digital releases under their belt, the Sundries crew felt the time was right to get their first outing on wax cooking. Austrian DJ and producer gutinstinct does the honours with his '4 Real' EP, a collection of rough-around-the-edges but delightfully dreamy house music as we've come to expect from him after previous releases on the likes of Axe On Wax and Dream Raw Recordings. From the backwaters of New Orleans, founder of the Mystery Zone imprint and parties Hiatt dB bursts onto the international scene with glorious technicolour debut EP ‘Palimpsest’, marking our first recruit from the US of A. Having grown up in the Gulf Coast’s San Antonio, Hiatt made the move to New Orleans in 2015 with his heart set on exporting the sound of the Gulf South to the global discourse. Here, newly exposed influences from the Mediterranean to West Africa, Brazil through to the Caribbean motivated him to begin making dance music and performing as a percussionist and DJ.

True to the drum city, Hiatt doesn’t let up on the rhythmic assault. From joyful piano stabs and dizzying percussive crescendos in ‘Sun Spell’ to the intricate snare rudiment of ‘Palimpsest’; the sizzling, hypnotic ‘Big Easy’ stylings of ‘6 O’Clock Rock’ to basking in the euphoric, sparkling breaks of ‘Everyday Break’. It’s the warm afterglow you need as the journey of the record comes to it’s triumphant conclusion. We couldn’t be happier to have Hiatt dB joining the RS family.
