This project matured over five years, from our first exploratory flute improvisations, and through sharing and experimenting with arrangements of each other’s songs, to this finished suite of pieces. Our collaboration grew from our shared love for traditional flute music, and for songs of Earth and Spirit.

The album is a dance between the ancient Japanese shakuhachi flute and the Native American style flute, woven together with songs of the elements. A musical journey that moves between the simplicity and spaciousness of the flute melodies, to the intricacy of the songs that dive deep into the roots of humanity and soar high with the flight of the eagle.

Lua Maria sings and plays Native American style flute, guitar, charango and frame drum.
Adrian Freedman plays Japanese shakuachi flute, guitar, harmonium, frame drum, shakers and temple bells.

Inspired by our recent travels in Santa Barbara, CA and The White Lotus Foundation, this meditative instrumental is in honor of the Chumash tribe, the indigenous people of the region. The key is anchored in F with the tanpura drone and F crystal bowl with melodies and harmonies of Spanish guitar played modally capturing moods and emotions leading to resolution and relaxation.

The Medicine Buddha Mantra calls to the Medicine Buddha to eliminate the pain of illness and suffering. The mantra is repeated several times with increasing intensity imploring the Medicine Buddha to hear and relieve the depth of suffering. It then hails the enlightenment of the Medicine Buddha and offers profound respect as the prayer is relinquished to the Medicine Buddha.

Translation:

As with any poetry, song or chant, there are many possible ways to translate the Medicine Buddha mantra. This is one way to translate the specific words literally.

OM (this is not a “word” but the intonation of the sacred vibration of the universe)

Bekhandze O Healer (of suffering)

Bekhandze O Healer (of the true cause of suffering)

Maha bekhandze O Great Healer (of subtle defilements that cause suffering)

Bekhandze Randza O King of Healing

Samudgate perfectly liberated auspicious being

Soha I offer this prayer and now relinquish it … (to you Medicine Buddha)”

This is one English version of the meaning and intent of the Mantra:

May the sentient beings that suffer across space and time

May their illness and the causes of illness be quickly removed.

And may this illness of body, speech and mind forever be gone.

Medicine Buddha Mantra

Manish Vyas, born in Gujarat, India (lives in Switzerland) and has been learning Indian music since the age of ten, he learnt Tabla with Ustad Allarakha in Mumbai, where he continued for many years, while he was in charge of the musical department at Osho Ashram in Pune, organizing and performing concerts. He is composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist (Tabla, Harmonium, Santoor, Keyboard) and teacher. Along his lifetime musical path, he has composed hundreds of songs, mainly in the devotional, folk, instrumental, meditative and Sufi genres. He has released more than 20 albums. He offers the perfect blend of Indian genuine sounds merged with a touch of fusion, which makes his music so accessible and appreciated by all type of listeners in the search of authentic Indian sounds. Manish lives currently in Switzerland where he runs a music academy in his spare time. "Important is people know what is what when it comes to sound, Indian music, mantra and Indian spirituality. I share that, what i learned from genuine sources, this is the least respect that Indian music deserves and will always deserve."
