Hell and High Water: The Mixtape

One moment you throw your arms in the air because the bass drop arrived unexpectedly, and the next you freeze, enveloped by a dense fog of ambient sounds, before a chopped vocal sample subtly conjures up the next tune. Interlooping rhythms, sudden mood shifts, and weird leaps to wherever the bassline heads, are the key signature of the Berlin-based dérive. Known for her UK Bass-driven sets, she chose her name wistfully, as the definition of the situationist movement's concept shows: "a mode of experimental behavior linked to the conditions of urban society: a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances." A sentence one can think about, or dance to – if dérive puts on another banger.
