One of the most compelling and widely spoken about folklores in the Punjabi language is the story of Pooran Bhagat. Pooran was a Prince born to King Salwaan of Sialkot and his wife Ichran. They were told by pundits to send Pooran away from their kingdom for 12 years in order to avoid bad fortune. Once he returned after this period, Pooran first visited his mother, from where he learns he now also has a step mother, named Loona, as his King father married for a second time. Despite warnings from his mother that Loona does not have good intentions towards him, Pooran insists on visiting her as he also considers Loona a mother figure. Recounting this conversation between the Prince and his mother, here is the first song of our series “Lok Qisse”.

ਸਾਡੇ ਪੂਰਵਜਾਂ, ਦਾਦਿਆਂ-ਪੜਦਾਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਈ ਸਦੀਆਂ ਜੀਅ ਭਰ ਕੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਿਆ। ਅਟਕ ਦਰਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਯਮੁਨਾ ਤੱਕ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਸਨੀਕ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਾਇਕੀ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਗਵੱਈਏ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੰਗੀ, ਅਲਗੋਜ਼ੇ, ਤੂੰਬੇ, ਕੋਈ ਖੜਤਾਲਾਂ ਖੜਕਾ ਕੇ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਕਵੀਸ਼ਰੀ ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ।

ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਲੋਕ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਕਿੱਸਾ 'ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਤ' ਜੋ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ-ਪਸੰਦ ਕਿੱਸਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਐੱਚ.ਐੱਮ. ਰਿਕਾਰਡਜ਼ ਦੇ ਯੂ-ਟਿਊਬ ਚੈਨਲ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ ਹਾਂ।

ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਸਿਆਲਕੋਟ ਉੱਤੇ, ਰਾਜੇ ਸਲਵਾਨ ਦੀ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਰਾਣੀ ਇੱਛਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁੱਖੋਂ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੇ ਜਨਮ ਲਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਪੂਰਨ। ਪੂਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋਤਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਕਹਿਣ 'ਤੇ 12 ਸਾਲ ਲਈ ਭੋਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਜਦੋਂ ਜਵਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਭੋਰੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਆਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੇ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਰੀ ਭਰੀ। ਇਸ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਾ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਦੋਹੇਂ ਮਾਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਥਾ ਟੇਕ ਕੇ ਆ। ਪੂਰਨ ਮਾਂ ਇੱਛਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਸ਼ੀਰਵਾਦ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਤਰੇਈ ਮਾਂ ਲੂਣਾ ਦੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰਨ ਲੱਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਂ ਇੱਛਰਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤ ਪੂਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਜਦੀ ਹੈ। ਪੂਰਨ ਜ਼ਿਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਤਰੇਈ ਮਾਂ ਲੂਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਥਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਟੇਕਣਾ ਹੈ। ਸਕੀ ਮਾਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪੇਟ ਚੋਂ ਜਨਮਿਆਂ ਜੋ ਉਸਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਤੇ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਜਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵੇ ਪੂਰਨਾ ਮਤਰੇਈਆਂ ਮਾਂਵਾਂ,ਮਾਵਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਉਹ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਈਰਖਾ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨਾਲ ਭਰੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਹੀ ਚੰਗੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਤਵਾਰੀਖ਼ ਗਵਾਹ ਹੈ,ਕਿ ਰਾਮ ਚੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਲਛਮਣ, ਰੂਪ ਅਤੇ ਬਸੰਤ ਦੀ ਮਤਰੇਈ ਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਮਤਰੇਈਆਂ ਮਾਂਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ ਸਗੋੰ ਬਰਬਾਦੀ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।ਮੇਰੀ ਸੌਕਣ ਲੂਣਾ ਵੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਓਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਕਰੇਗੀ, ਮੇਰੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਮੰਨ ਅਤੇ ਲੂਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਥਾ ਟੇਕਣ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਹਿਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਲ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦੇ, ਮਾਂ ਇੱਛਰਾਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੇਰਵੇ ਦੇ ਕਿ ਇਉਂ ਸਮਜਾਉੰਦੀ ਹੈ
