In the realm of Balearic beat, the vinyl notes waver between the echoes of house and Italo house, embracing the mellow sway of deep house. A languid R&B-infused beat, clocking in below 119bpm, sets the rhythm, composed of the essential trio: bass drum, snare, and hi-hats, often choreographed by the Roland TR-909 drum machine. These beats unfold in a laid-back dance, a rhythmic tapestry woven with the soulful threads of Latin, African, Funk, and Dub influences. Balearic beat borrows production techniques from its dance music contemporaries, an eclectic fusion popular in its heyday.

Vocals, though intermittent, share the stage with instrumental compositions, where acoustic instruments like guitars and pianos occasionally join the melodic conversation. Yet, tethered to a specific percussion pattern that eventually fell out of favor, the once-prominent Balearic beat gracefully bowed out, its repertoire assimilated into the broader realms of "chill out" and "downtempo" genres.

The architects of Balearic beat, in contrast to their UK disciples, define its essence as the DJ's ability to traverse a vast sonic landscape, navigating from the early minimalism of New Beat to the pioneering extended remixes of pop anthems. Balearic DJ sets are a testament to the art of musical divergence, marked by sharp turns in direction. Beyond Ibiza's shores, the general perception labels Balearic beat as a distinct music style. However, within the island's community, it is a rebellion against conformity, an embrace of non-style—a challenge to the norm. It embodies a freestyle expression seamlessly binding sporadic vinyl inspirations through technical finesse on the turntables.

In the present electronic dance music landscape, where stylistic boundaries reign supreme, only a handful of promoters and DJs dare to stretch the spectrum of styles as far as Balearic beat once did, fearing the loss of identity and clientele. DJ Alfredo remains a torchbearer of diversity among Ibiza DJs, but the art of mixing and the terminology that once defined Balearic beat have largely been absorbed by the Chillout scene.

This one’s all about the guest mix really so I won’t talk too much about my hour, except that I premiered a new edit that I’m quite pleased with and which will be out soon! 
Anyway, on to that guest mix. Bit of a special one that has been in the works for ages and I wasn’t sure would ever happen… but here it is! It’s my massive honour to bring you an exclusive guest mix from none other than Danielle Moore of Crazy P. Crazy P are one of my absolute favourite acts, and they’ve been doing the business for literally decades now. They’re one of the world’s most in demand disco outfits… although with their unique take on the sound, calling them ‘disco’ is doing them a bit of a disservice. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing them do their thing a couple of times and they put on a hell of a show, led by Danielle’s wonderful voice and stage presence.
I was totally trying my luck when I reached out to Danielle on Instagram to ask for a mix, but bless her she replied, she’s absolutely lovely, we’ve been chatting a bit and she sent me this monster of a mix. Full of the sort of deep, low slung, after hours disco that Crazy P are known for, it’s an absolutely impeccable selection, ending on a Crazy P classic. Possibly the biggest guest I’ve had on my show to date, and definitely one of the finest mixes ever to grace my little show. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

David Russell Lee is a British DJ, producer and Remixer Icon.

One of the first albums I ever bought on Vinyl in the 90’s was the “Can’t Get High Without You Compilation” And back then I actually thought the artist was really named Joey Negro. Not knowing then that Dave created the name using a mix of Pal Joey “Reach Up To Mars and J. Walter Negro “Shoot The Pump”. He thought at that time, the name Dave Lee was too boring against the likes of junior Vazquez, David Morales and Frankie Knuckles in the House Music Scene. 

Following the George Floyd movement in 2020 Dave Lee dropped the Joey Negro Moniker for good. 

Having such a huge Discography of music to choose from it was difficult for me to discard some amazing tracks. In the end I’ve chosen 40 tracks which mean the most and have the best memories for me, so sorry to my followers and listeners if your favourite tunes didn’t make the Final Cut.

Of course I have to say a huge thank you to Dave Lee for all his hard work, producing such incredible music for all these years. I can’t wait to hear you play live again and will look forward to all your future releases.

@gregmiddleton was in the hot seat this week, kicking off the show with some lovely disco and house flavours, including red hot promo gear from maestro Michael Gray.

This week's special guest mixer is Jesse Mathews @jesse_mathews from Florida, USA, and he delivered a wonderful downtempo mix, packed full of gentle grooves to help you drift away into your own world for 60 minutes. In his own words... "I'm a music obsessed child of the 70's and 80's...having grown up in Central Florida riding skateboards and getting all my junior mischief maker badges...the one thing that remained constant was music. Combining wood and nails from junk piles at construction sites to build ramps to skate on as a kid, evolved into going out to concerts, parties and nightclubs. Hardcore and punk rock interests morphed into hip hop, reggae, breakbeat, electro, techno, disco and house music. I bought tons of music that I played on a belt driven turntable that used to belong to my parents. Eventually I was handed down a set of direct drive decks from a buddy upgrading his system. I bought myself a cheap mixer and I started making mixtapes for friends, road trips, chillin' at home, whatever the situation called for. Years later, I picked up Serato and began buying digital music. I started putting mixes on soundcloud over a dozen years ago and some of them received some nice feedback. Fast forward to today...I am still hooked on buying music that moves me and making mixes to send out to my friends. Sometimes I still get on the skateboard and try not to bust my ass."
