Whodamanny’s second 12” on Periodica sub-label Biloba is ‘Miranda,’ and here, the West Hill producer and DJ explores equatorial grooves and evocative fantasies across four eclectic versions, with an influence of late 80s/early 90s Italo magic threading into the productions. In the Radio Version, sunset guitars weave through celebratory brass as voices sing lovelorn lyricisms over exotic dance beats, while in the Instrumental, more space is given for the rhythms to move the body, and for warming keys to color the joyous flow. Elswhere, the Midnite Mix sets dreamhouse pianos and heady vocal loops to serpentine bass and proto-progressive rhythms—the vibe minimal and mystical—and in the Dub version, tropical pads, and balearic guitars refract through webs of echo as aqueous synths swim towards the sun. The newest single from Whodamanny’s Biloba sublabel of Periodica Records is “Volveràn,” a dark and delirious saxophonic strut given four different variations. In the Club version, gang vocals chant to the sky, pads hover like neon mist, and technoid synths twinkle through moonlit boulevards as basslines clad in black leather stomp over a futuristic disco dance. The Radio mix distills these characteristics into sorcerous display of pop songcraft, whereas the Dub goes elsewhere, omitting the sax completely in favor of delayed drum dynamics, cosmic chords climaxes, sunbaked guitar jangles, and vocals shrouded in a hallucinatory haze. And in a bold display of disco house minimalism, the Sax Only cut strips down to saxophone, bass, and drums, with accents of guitar and synth providing subtle pops of color.

Raffaele Arcella, otherwise known as Whodamanny, is an Italian music producer and a key figure of Periodica Records. He’s a deep explorer of Casio’s “phase distortion” synthesis and has released creative and far-out solo productions such as Cosmic Morphology, Primaria Industria, Dancing Ritual and the last album T.C.P., in addition to his collaborative work with Enrico Fierro (aka Milord) as The Normalmen and with Fierro and Dario Di Pace (aka Mystic Jungle) as The Mystic Jungle Tribe. As well, he’s an adventurous and eclectically minded DJ whose sets embody the true spirit of the art. In this extract, Whodamanny provides a dance-ful selection recorded live on 28.11.2018 at Free Ride in Perugia for 〶 Afro Templum 〶 people.
