Knocking On Heaven's Door

My African-like homemade instruments adventure began in the late 80s with discretion in the Caribbean island of Haiti. It was the work and inspiration of a Cameroonian born multimedia journalist with a positive sense of musicianship, and author of a memoir on " African Survivals  in Haitian Music”.

 I used to be a singer, a rhythm guitarist and harmonica player, author, composer and performer in my native Cameroon in the 60s and 70s, and later in Chad, Belgium or Germany. 

While in Haiti, I was inspired by an environment that sometimes reminded me of Africa.  Trying, without much success, to recreate mythical African musical instruments such as the Kalimba* or the West African Kora.

 I would not reach my goal. However, at the beginning of the 90s, the will and the passion finally induced me to reproduce those ancestral jewels in my way. With materials found on the spot, I started making my own models of Kalimbas and 12-string instruments that I called “Afro-Harp BRN”.

Currently settled in US, Belmond Black is a longtime Cameroonian-Haitian songwriter. For the past five decades, he has been making music on the quiet during his wanderings in Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. The multimedia journalist by trade is also a multi-instrumentalist, a music researcher and an amateur luthier. He spent half of his life in Haiti, in the Caribbean region.

 He worked for more than three decades for radio, print and web media, and as press correspondent and for the UN. He  also held the position of communications officer in government and non-government institutions. He carried out numerous artistic, anthropological and sociological observations in Haiti and has been writing related books.

The ever young looking man, today in his deep 60s  was approved by the France based Society of Songwriters and Music Performers (SACEM) in 1975. However, he finally decided to break silence and start a new music career and a new life, a long battle of Hope. 

Early music influences

Belmond Black music skills grew as early as age 10, when he started playing harmonica and flute alone, reproducing some popular songs heard on the radio. "In the 60s and 70s, you had to have money, a godfather or a committed producer to release an album  in Cameroon".

The little child I was also listened to melodies from France, Cuba, and enjoyed Congolese beats, merengue music from the Dominican Republic, which also inspired local popular artists like Cherami de la capitale, Jacob Major Mekunde or Kamdem Iréné. 

Belmond Black childish soul delighted the song of birds, the voluptuous sounds of the 50's, 60's and 70's and acoustic guitar artists like Cromwel, Jacob Medjo Mesom, Lobe Lobe Rameau, Eboa Lotin or Anne Marie Nzie. All these ingredients constituted the foundation of his sonorous universe. 

The radio, the phonogram, the turntable records and the performances of local bands structured his artistic subconscious. 

Belmond Black would disappear at night without his parents’ knowledge to swell the crowd of onlookers who stood before the dance halls, where famous artists like Cher Ami de la capitale or Kamdem Iréné were performing.
