Vital Spark is a Scottish producer influenced by the more melodic side of underground electronic music. 

Vital Spark's productions take elements from italo disco, trance, 80's synthpop, and classic house to create upbeat and positive synth-centric dance tracks. 

His next release, 'Diskoteket', is due for release in April this year on his own label 'Curriculum Vital' - both digitally and as a 12" record.

Frankfurt's celebrated producer, Philip Lauer returns to Especial, this time teaming up with Berlin based vocalist Dena for a special collaboration, covering Julie Stapleton's soulful House classic with a modern interpretation across a number of versions (vinyl and digital). 

After the success of the Hotel Lauer EP on Especial way back in 2016, Lauer has continued his ascendency with albums for Permanent Vacation and Running Back, as well as releasing a string of sure-fire, dancefloor friendly EPs for the likes of Cin Cin, Futureboogie and Skatebard's Digitalo Enterprises.

Born and raised in Bulgaria, before making the move the music mecca of Berlin, Denitza Todorova has a carved a path with her electronic, dance pop stylings across releases for the likes of K7 and Kitsune Music. First appearing on Make It Stay from Lauer's last album, it jumped out as the perfect partnership to bring the raw, soulful and uplifting sounds of the cult V4 Visions label up to date. Founded by Alex Palmer, the label was part of the UK's early 90s club sound, releasing street soul, deep house and more, in Where's Your Love Gone, Palmer and 18-year-old writer/vocalist Julie Stapleton hit on the perfect marriage of Lovers Rock and Street Soul yearning with the haunting sounds of US House. Presented as a new take on the classic, but with utmost respect, the EP starts with the Club Mix, a Larry Heard bassline joins a marimba melody, lifting Dena's vocals of youth's lost love and pain. This is followed by the Demo Mix, a warm, beautiful string laden original take that Lauer and the label felt had to be included. 

DJ Slyngshot is welcomed to provide a deep, tech remix. A name to watch via his releases on his YAPPIN label and recent EP for Workshop, his remix is an analogue twist of hypnotic, raw dub techno percussion and counter breaks builds as string and piano join. The EP ends in the Synthapella, as bongos, cowbell and whistle are added to create a drifting Balearic version for late summer nights and dawn that highlight Dena's vocals in a 'sunrise' light.

A1. Lauer & Dena - Where's Your Love Gone? (Club Mix)

Space – the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Shubostar starship. Her mission: To explore strange new music worlds. To seek out new beats and new melodies. To boldly go where no woman or man has gone before.

Remember those words from Star Trek? They do fit quite well for our latest signing, South Korea born Shubostar who presents her »Live At Robert Johnson« debut »Dolphin Dream«. Wait … did we just say dolphin? Well … who knows if there aren't dolphins in space too …

Let's begin with »Queen Millennia«, a melancholic but somehow hopeful piece of new cosmic disco music - a name which suits Shubostar's style of music quite good. She's using disco music as a basis, adding sprinkles of »cosmic sounds« plus a little touch of techno and thus creates her own soundscapes indeed rooted deep in space.

»Dolphin Dream« is up next and suddenly we're not deep in space but deep in the ocean with synthesizer arpeggios all over the place. But this dolphin's dream sounds a bit like as if he's following a starship that dove into the ice cold waters of the Atlantic on its search for Atlantis - beautiful!

»Siestar« is far from sounding like a siesta. It's a highly positive and uplifting tune which will put a big smile on everybody's face for sure when played out loud to an up and down jumping crowd in a club anywhere. It's vibrant, it's lively, it's fast, it has star qualities!

Shubostar changes the beat and the pace a bit for her last track »Éternité«. The tune sounds like a theme song of an 80ies science fiction movie situated in the Paris of 2099. Imagine a foggy and wet November evening with our leading actress, cigarette in her mouth, walking down an old but totally modernized boulevard ablaze with neon lights and you might get close to the feel of this wonderful tune. And aren't lyrics sung in French not just great? Mais oui, bien sûr!

3 - Shubostar - Siestar - Snippet

Without pretension, when Adolpho & Franky take on a set, they often have the ambition to do whatever they want. But as dancefloor dictators, and despite their rather evocative pseudonyms, they are actually known for one violence. That of the requirement, applied to all the areas they touch upon. Known in Lausanne for having concentrated honeyed musical roundups in the club of La Ruche, which was followed by the Folklor two years ago, the two partners cultivate interdisciplinarity and a certain taste for mixing cultures. Between the Spanish Vintage Franky, which was parachuted in from a past that has dragged hip hop or breakdance, and Flash Fab, a German-Swiss graphic designer who teaches his aesthetic visions during the day, a musical agreement has formed around protean productions and mixes, ranging from the minimal to the house. Serial diggers, always on the lookout for both dance and experimental tracks, Adolpho & Franky share a vision of the party as an art in its own right, and agree that atmosphere, audience interventions and other night contingencies are all part of their show. Solicited in Berlin, New York, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris, Ibiza, Rome, Oslo or Barcelona, in renowned clubs or major festivals, these happy few are still making audiences dance, audiences which in their image, are curious to know what the future music has to offer us yet.

After debuting on Collective Leisure with a powerful remix for Stack Effect last year, Hard Ton (SXDNS176) is finally back on the rising and shining British label this time with a solo EP: “Synthetic/Safe” delivers two beautiful originals – three if you consider the Dub version of “Safe” an entirely different piece – which come heavily packed with the characteristic and sophisticated chic-à-go-go Disco sonority of the acclaimed Italian duo, who have been quite busy the last few months with well-received appearances on Iptameno Discos, Polari, Live At Robert Johnson, Ruvido, and Belong. The consistency of their work is more than proof they cannot get enough of bringing to life high-quality themes for many different kinds of dance floors. It’s kind of impressive, in our humble fanboy opinion.

Premiered here, the aforementioned “Safe (Dub)” is as dazzling as its original sister – and yes, it can be considered an entirely different piece, not when it comes to the elements used, but the aura. Less lyrical and more acid, the Dub mix manages to deliver a more upbeat message. It’s like when you express yourself twice, using exactly the same words, but in a different tone. If you can’t decide between them: buy both, play both. And before we leave: The nostalgic "Pacific State" sample and the OMG piano layer turned "Safe" one of our favourite works by Hard Ton.

Geoff Kirkwood is an artist for the people - not so concerned with image, status or even legacy he’s a creative who is as comfortable writing or presenting experimental symphonies and Audio Visual orchestral performances as he is delivering raucous kinetic techno to sweaty dance floors. 

Filling the spaces between his eclectic output, Kirkwood's work as Man Power has become some of his most meaningful and potent. The project began all the way back in 2014 as an anonymous series of dark remixes which culminated in a debut EP on Correspondant. Via his Man Power alias, Geoff has since gone on to show the complete picture of his sonic breadth via output for the likes of DFA, SKINT, Hivern Discs and his self-helmed Me Me Me imprint. Not just satisfied with making music, his acclaimed Us & Them parties have been reversing the grubby trends of club-night promotion, ditching advance tickets and corporate mentality in place for a focus on regional talent regardless of profile. 

Recorded live in Newcastle while opening for Leftfield's tour earlier this month, this DMY mix shows Man Power's selector skills at their very best. Spanning over two hours in length, strap in for a real journey from start to finish.
