BASICS OF SIKHI AT ANNUAL GNG FRESHERS FAIR

A big well done to the organisers of yesterday’s freshers event at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick. It was great to see so many students and their respective Sikh societies get together alongside Sikh Organisations including Sikh 2 Inspire, BOSS and Sikh Youth UK all playing a pivotal part in keeping students at universities on the right path. Also a huge thanks to Kam Singh of Sikh Channel.

Baljit Singh, Sukhdeep and teacher at Basics of Sikhi Academy, Amardeep Singh, attended alongside a few of the students from the Academy. We are grateful for those that came over and took time out to speak with us and for the feedback received on our students packs.

We hope to see the students again as we do talks at Universities around the country this academic year. Also, please don't forget that the opportunity of Seva is open to all students and Sangat, so we can all try to stay on the path of Sikhi. Langar Week is a campaign by Basics of Sikhi's sister organisation the Sikh Press Association which focuses on raising awareness about the practice of langar in order to tackle issues of hunger and poverty, as well as getting sangat into doing seva.

The Basics of Sikhi team were invited to the opening of the brand new Jet Singh Trust MMA Centre in Wolverhampton (8.10.17).

Alongside guest of honour Arjan Singh, a professional fighter at the highest level who refers to Sikhi as inspiring his career, Sukhdeep Singh gave a talk on how MMA (mixed martial-arts) and Sikhi can relate, referencing GurMat practices and itihaasic (historic) accounts.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji writes (and we read this in Rehraas Sahib):

The story of Ram remains immortal throughout the ages and their story is always spoken of.

The story of Ram has much spiritual meaning, and for it to have been mentioned in Gurbani in many places highlights its significance. If we take some time to learn about this story, we can understand why Diwali is celebrated, and how Bandi Chhorr Divas (Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji freeing the 52 kings) is a different celebration.
