Happy Meals is the Glasgow-based duo of Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook, life-partners since high school finding expression in cosmic form. Originally from the Scottish borders, Rodden and Cook (also of The Cosmic Dead) began Happy Meals in a flurry of experimentation at Glasgow’s creative hub The Green Door Studio. Initially the result of a free music production course, Apéro sees the pair embark on a blissful voyage into a love-fuelled, outward-looking hedonism. Both artists operate machines and sing but it’s the dominating Franco-Scottish lingua-franca of Suzanne Rodden that imbues a sense of seductive fun to the album.
Their first recorded statement, Apéro is an instant rush of Kosmiche-disco, utterly addictive and inviting. The epic Crystal Salutation welcomes the listener in with analogue synths delayed into the horizon before Electronic Disco ushers in distorted drum machines and Rodden’s disco-at- sunset vocal. Album stand-out Altered Images is a pop-masterpiece, mixing French / Italo disco, acid basslines and a sense of Scottish optimism. Age Of Love is unabashedly the feeling of being up until day-break, with layered synths climaxing all-around. Retro-futuristic visions abound on the beat-less Visions Of Utopia before closer
Le Voyage reprises back the cosmopolitan disco, playing out the perfect club night in ecstatic fashion. It’s an enchanting, inclusive vision; everyone is invited, the future is bright.

Better Person’s first single since the critically acclaimed EP It’s Only You marks a crucial shift in the Berlin-based singer’s artistic path. A result of his unexpected turn towards euro pop aesthetics, “Zakochany Człowiek” (A Man in Love), is an instant hit that cuts strong and deep with its earworm melody, moony synth hook, and dense Romantic aura. Having left behind former RnB explorations, Adam Byczkowski embraces Franco-Italian 70s and 80s sensibility and breathes new life into the legacy of Polish Romantic pop auteurs, such as Beata Kozidrak or Andrzej Zaucha. But what strikes here the most is the language: for the first time ever he sings in his native Polish tongue, as a way of reaching uncharted personal and emotional depths. His voice, which has grown powerful yet tender, channels the velvet rawness of the Polish language, while telling the story of love once lost. “Zakochany człowiek” is not only an ultimately catchy tune but also a reflection upon the fleeting nature of things experienced and then forgotten, fading memories of someone who has become no more than a spectral presence. “Here’s a man in eternal love”, he sings almost cold-heartedly, just before the chorus breaks into Roy Molloy’s final sax solo.

Blast Off Through the Wicker documents Art Feynman looking for life in the lifeless, questioning what it means to be living.  There is a calm, disciplined pocket to be felt in everything Feynman does; krautrock slink, staccato bounce, and pentatonic bursts of Nigerian Highlife fuzz pour on the temporal canvas with unquestionable ease, never falling in the wrong place. Even more admirable is, that his “canvas” is a four-track tape recorder, and that Blast Off features no loops or drum machines despite its aesthetically faithful motorik and afrobeat underpinnings.  Nowhere is this fact more surprising than on album standout “Slow Down” which pulses along infectiously with a crunchy backbeat, and deftly arpeggiating bass lines that are so locked-in that it would be hard to fault an unknowing ear for assuming the whole thing is tediously programmed.

There are gentler sides to Blast Off that conjure the spacey tenderness of Arthur Russell inventively and respectfully, without adopting their muse’s palette wholesale. In this regard Blast Off is an endearing collection of songs that capture the ear with warm-yet-clear cassette aesthetics and spot-on musicianship, both of which form an angle that points lovingly to Feynman’s deep and varied influences. Make no mistake-- this one truly is alive.

The Room

Not punk, but still hits that sweet spot in DIY pop. Kind of reminds me of Animals & Men (UK, 1978-82). This is from Holland, in 1981. Recently re-released by German label Discos Transgénero in a nifty artful colored vinyl edition (50$CAD). This song is so "gold" that it automatically becomes an instant must-own classic. The new release comes with the band's more ambient pop experiments, and none of the euro-accented, half-spoken half-sung vocals of this single. I'll be drinking from the bottle containing this lightning.
