Well, I never! Art-pop amblers Buffet Lunch have embarked on their blue period. Released today, new single ‘Blue Chairs, Blue Floors, Blue Folders’ is the first track to sally forth from their forthcoming album ‘Perfect Hit!’, out on April 4th through Upset The Rhythm.
 
Comprised of musicians based in Glasgow, Edinburgh and (sometimes) Newcastle, Buffet Lunch craft ramshackle odysseys of observational charm. Always catchy, often profound. Buffet Lunch have been previously described as a band that create 'a hodgepodge of noises’, and who are 'lyrically ridiculous'. Both claims are strongly denied by the group.
 
‘Blue Chairs, Blue Floors, Blue Folders’ is a deceptively carefree track, with its lengthy Shadows’ style intro, it is packed with anticipation, it revels in waiting, enjoying the mundane surroundings that often accompany monumental changes. This defines the modus operandi for a whole album of curious turns; a record that sees the band focus on more overtly personal themes like ancestry and becoming a parent, without neglecting the flawed Presbyterians and conker champions of the subconscious. ‘Perfect Hit!’ is built from bricks, ideas and plots, melodies and hooks, each stacked upon the other. From the first drum machine kick, “Sentiment” is an ephemeral instant classic, an earnest bedroom pop song wrapped in textures evocative of slick City Pop from 1980s Japan, the dreamy experimental disco of Arthur Russell, and more recent experiments in vintage and lo-fi sonics from Dean Blunt and James Ferraro.“ The song is romantic in both senses of the term – intimate, sincere, and seductive, it quivers also with the anxiety that arises in the face of the sublime.
Sentiment is the follow up to Berlin based sometime-Sean Nicholas Savage guitarist Adam Byczkowski's first recording as Better Person, the breathtakingly pretty Soundcloud hit “I Wake Up Tired.” Having joined the roster of Berlin imprint Mansions and Millions, his debut EP is planned for release later this year.

Better Person’s first single since the critically acclaimed EP It’s Only You marks a crucial shift in the Berlin-based singer’s artistic path. A result of his unexpected turn towards euro pop aesthetics, “Zakochany Człowiek” (A Man in Love), is an instant hit that cuts strong and deep with its earworm melody, moony synth hook, and dense Romantic aura. Having left behind former RnB explorations, Adam Byczkowski embraces Franco-Italian 70s and 80s sensibility and breathes new life into the legacy of Polish Romantic pop auteurs, such as Beata Kozidrak or Andrzej Zaucha. But what strikes here the most is the language: for the first time ever he sings in his native Polish tongue, as a way of reaching uncharted personal and emotional depths. His voice, which has grown powerful yet tender, channels the velvet rawness of the Polish language, while telling the story of love once lost. “Zakochany człowiek” is not only an ultimately catchy tune but also a reflection upon the fleeting nature of things experienced and then forgotten, fading memories of someone who has become no more than a spectral presence. “Here’s a man in eternal love”, he sings almost cold-heartedly, just before the chorus breaks into Roy Molloy’s final sax solo.

Alone in the world, we find ourselves. Inside ourselves, we find something to share with the world. 
The Essential John Moods, a solo album in all senses of the word, is what Jonathan Jarzyna of Fenster found in himself during a summer spent hiking along the Iberian coast, and he now wants to share it with you. A mini-guitar on his back and a copy of GarageBand on his phone allowed Jarzyna to record songs each evening as he arrived in a new town after a long day traveling by foot. (He did, admittedly, add live drum tracks and some additional instrumentation back in Berlin.) The album preserves this peripatetic feeling, each song relating to the next as one city or village relates to its neighbor, its unique situation contrasting with the shared architectural vernacular. Blipping instrumental interludes (“Trainride,” “Pontevedra,” “Coastal Way”) even capture the disordered, delirious feeling of transit hubs and the sleep-bleared mystery of waking on an unfamiliar road.
“I just came alive completely” are the first words Jarzyna murmurs on “New Spring,” invoking the spirit of the album. He speaks not of the liveliness of manic activity, but the heightened, tender sensitivity of presence. It’s a fullness of living captured by the transition from the lush, jangling groove of “The Weight” to the spacious contemplation of “Pawns.” The dreamy echo of the 60s’ and 70s’ soft rock and folk troubadours suffuses the album, and the organ-soaked “Where In The World” even has a psychedelic tinge. But the overall effect is quite contemporary, from the back-of-the-nightbus lounge funk of “Take It Home” (featuring an amazing turn from arch-crooner Sean Nicholas Savage) to the mournful cupboard jazz of “Almost Gone.” “Dark Wall”  sounds like a honkytonk ramble alongside a robot tentatively learning to play lap steel. “Leap of Love,” an early album highlight, passes over the listener in shimmering waves, a love song which remains a mystery even to its creator. 
In the meditation tape coda “Relax Your Foot,” Jarzyna selects the perfect sample to encapsulate The Essential John Moods’ hopeful receptivity: the late Professor Carl Sagan reminding us that “despite our limitations and fallibilities, we humans are capable of greatness.”
