Mantissa’s second venture into the label space comes from Bristol-born DJ / producer & radio host Bex.  Percussive, heavy, bolty and jolty, the record is full of moments destined for those wanting to lose themselves on the dancefloor through Bex’s signature emotive soundscapes. 

Her late 2021 debut EP release, “Feels EP” felt reflective and warm, influenced by the increased introspection during lockdowns over the past two years. Her second release, Mantissa 002, sees these emotions once again taking centre stage with added dance-ready grooves born out of the return and resurgence of the freedom to dance. The record combines those emotional notes with high energy sounds, futuristic harmonies and classic but experimental dance influences.

The first track of the record “Stretcher” starts the affair on a smooth and soothing note, airy and easy before a welcoming kickdrum twists, breaks and stretches the ambience. “Science in Sport” blends an emotive and mood driven melody with familiar garage notes. These opening two tracks demonstrate the refreshing diversity in Bex’s sound and her unique approach to creating forward thinking dance music. 

Bex is a Bristol native, the experimental and less orderly side to dance music a key influence to her creative efforts. Holding a dance show residency “Stocks & Shares” on Noods Radio since 2018, her sound has evolved through broadening her listening during the curation of monthly shows. “Ridiculous” is traditionally experimental and the third track of the record brings a pulsating energy to the forefront, sirens alongside claps, with a pace and depth this song wonderfully encapsulates Bex’s approach and inspirations.

The whole style of the record is influenced by Bristol’s trademark sound, alongside this inspirations such as Om Unit or James Blake are subtly clear to hear. However, many of the moods projected throughout feel equally inspired by artistic influences beyond those of specific artists or locations. “Infinite Games” could just as easily soundtrack a sci-fi epic as it could move a dancefloor.

Dance music’s most notorious producer “Unknown Artist” returns for remix duties for the final track of the record. Straight to the point its four four and tempered groove, understated ravey percussion and spacey melodies expertly amalgamates what made Mantissa 001 so unique with what makes 002 so special.

Paul Wise aka Placid is the driving force behind ‘We’re Going Deep’ – a thriving online community and record label that’s showing no signs of letting up as we glide towards the end of 2021.

Sticking to the trusted format of 4 tracks of high grade electronic explorations per EP, all sourced from equally excellent artists. WGD 005 fires its way into orbit on Side A with the opening chimes of Australian producer Tim Jackiw’s ‘Urban theory’. A purist slice of machine driven techno-soul that plots a cosmic trajectory through sharp FM bass tones, powerful kick and driving 303 - all drawn together through sparkling rings of chorded melody. As the rattle of metallic snares and searing acid rise, the track unleashes at warp speed: bringing sheer delight. Followed by the expansive talents of 030303 hitman Böhm, ‘The Search’ meanders deeper into interstellar fields with a jam packed full of melancholia, making full use of minimal machine elements for a maximal sound.

Welcoming another original purveyor of electronic music from Australia to Side B, the legendary Biz straddles the line effortlessly between IDM and Electro with the wonderfully uplifting air of ‘Meltdown’. Stacked full of low-end and glistening solar frequencies, his take on the deep space sound will definitely have fans of Automatic Tasty, Moy and Cignol phoning home. Last but not least, Yorkshireman Al Bradley plots a course back towards inner space, serving up a slow acid bubbler that’s text book in terms of restraint and poise – perfect for those orbital moments as you near your final destination.

WWM is happy to welcome one of the purest talents of the scene, directly from Kyiv, Vladimir Gnatenko.
Vladimir built his reputation with some outstanding live shows, and he is one of the most interesting artists of the shining Ukrainian scene.

The EP is a perfect example of the diversity of styles he covers, from 4/4 to breakbeat with a very unique blend of spacey trance sound which is a trademark of his productions.

A side opens up with Storm, an emotional excursion into Vlad’s art. Nostalgic synth lines evolving into a hedonistic dancefloor banger.

A2 is Roosblom, a kidnapping tune that brings you to a dystopic world when new forms of life are trying to surface.

On the flip side, we have Toevlug, the most introspective piece of the EP. Melancholic sounds and robotic sequences create a dreamy aura while the sneaky breakbeat held up the tension.

Skarrel closes the EP with a ruthless 4/4 beat combined with a gloomy atmosphere that finds its climax on the break. That’s pure madness in a big sound system.

Far over on the west coast of the USA we find a room full of drum
machines, samplers and keyboards. Hard at work is Israel ‘Iz’ Gravning
aka Tone Scientist, who’s been using this Seattle studio to produce
genre-defying future music for more than 25 years.
An avid student of jazz fusion, hip hop, house, techno and others, he
was galvanised to build his own studio after hearing jungle and drum &
bass on a trip to London in 1995. His musical course thus intersected
with the collectives then pushing new dancefloor sonics rooted in the rich
tradition of Black music – like Nuyorican Soul over on the east coast,
and the new broken beats of IG Culture, Dego and Bugz In The Attic in
London. Then, in the early 2000s, Iz put out a handful of EPs under
different aliases, including ‘Lion Dub’ on the Guidance sublabel
Subtitled, but soon stepped back from the public stage. That’s not to say
he stopped making or playing music, though. Far from it.
Fast forward two decades and our very own Walrus, chilly but happy in
the depths of a Toronto winter, happened across ‘Lion Dub’ in the
legendary Play The Record store. Intrigued, he tracked Iz down and
discovered he had been active all this time. A short email exchange later
and this 2xLP of archive material was born.
These six tracks explain fully why Iz calls his studio the ‘Time Machine’:
vintage equipment and instruments converse with up-to-date software;
classic sounds and textures twist into fresh configurations; and Iz’s own
creativity and musicality sings to us from a location beyond the trappings
of time or genre.
All music written, produced and mixed by Israel Gravning aka Tone
Scientist in Seattle/Washington between 2005 - 2008 except for “Things
Get Done”, written and produced in 2003, and “Bossman”, originally
produced by Kris Moon and remixed by Tone Scientist. Zion12 was the
name used by Israel for releasing Jungle/DnB and when DJing
professionally around Seattle and elsewhere. Mastered & cut by Stefan

This moment had been a long time coming, years worth of training and practise came down to a short frame of around ten seconds in which all else hung in the balance. This was not a game, oh no quite the opposite.

As the floodlights dimmed he tried to drown out the noise from the rowdy and excitable crowd of onlookers who knew not who he was or what he was about. For them this was quite simply entertainment, a night on the town and chance to gloat the next day stood by water coolers and over paperwork.

For him this was much more, this was science in sport. He got ready to throw the first punch...

Mantissa release a new EP from Bristol based producer Bex. This is her second release and comes hot off the heels of a late 2021 release which made quite the statement.

This time her energy has been channeled into the return of nightlife and experiences on the dancefloor. Purpose built for the clubs, this one goes deep and "Sport In Science" was our pick of the bunch..

Bex made her production debut towards the end of last year, with Mantissa 002 continuing to showcase her emotions-led style - creating worlds and melodies to get lost into. With residencies on Noods and 1020 Radio, Bex also runs the Women’s Producer Group and has gigs coming up with Tim Reaper, Bluetoof, Luka Una and more. 

Marking the second release on Mantissa’s label arm, the release also includes a remix from ‘Unknown Artist’ on the final track.
