While I was writing this song, I attempted to channel the feeling of taking something that doesn’t belong to you, or was never supposed to be yours because of the rise you get out of it, inherently driven by selfishness. The distorted vocal processing complimented the warped, dark basses in turn making the song cast a morose shadow over the listener. I felt like I tried a lot of new things while making this track specifically directed in a heavier style than what I usually make. This is one of my favorite vocal tracks to date and a song that really kick started the vision for the album as a whole. I feel as if this song embodies the majority of the album and I knew from the start that this song specifically was going to hold weight as a first release/introduction.

This song originally started off as a flip of “Deep End” by Birdy and was one of the first 115 bpm tracks that I ever experimented with. When I decided that I wanted this song to be “Greed”,  I began incorporating sounds like paper money being shuffled, coins/change, and other metallic fx to give it a bankroll feel. While writing and recording the lyrics, I was going for a very humble monotone approach to show the respect and diligence you must have with money and wealth versus the typical tone that is carried through other songs relating to this topic. This is one song on the album that takes a bit more of a dancier turn in the second half but it naturally ended up fitting the exact vibe that I wanted to express for “Greed”.

Greed (feat. Grim Steez)

This song started off as a layered guitar sample that my friend John Soderlund (Ecliptics) recorded that I made into a beat later that night. The lyrics and song were written separately before I intended on choosing it to fill the role for “Pride”, but it naturally found its way into the setting. The song was originally named “The Last Supper WIP” because as I was putting it together, I kept picturing someone going about their business sitting at a large busy table, unable to care about the commotion surrounding them. Although it is a very minimalistic track, I believe that the self confidence and ego that come with “Pride” shows through the eerie stillness of the song complimented by the echoed/delayed vocals, to show how prideful people only hear themselves talk.

I had a completely different vision for this track when I first started producing and writing the lyrics for it. Being that Sloth means “a reluctance to work or make an effort; laziness”, I wanted to go for a slower, more atmospheric approach. Despite my sentiments, the song organically took on a busier direction. While making this song I really got to experiment and find a flow in the booth while recording the vocals- especially within the layers. I took a much more out of the box approach to the second drop of this song production and vocal wise. As the creation process for the song moved along, I wanted it to feel like being stuck in a loop with everything spiraling around you.

Before writing this song, I had a really bad writer's block for a majority of the summer. Mid August, I ended up getting covid and was able to relax in my studio without any outside obligations for a bit. During this time, I was able to hone in on certain tasks and projects that I wanted to finish regarding the album. Both drops in this song are drastically different, but I believe that they show the highs and lows of gluttony. The first drop of this track ended up being super fun and gritty, leading into a creepy break up of atmospheres and reversed vox. I attempted to design the second drop to sound as if the song itself was being digested from the perspective of the inside of a stomach; consisting of rumbling basses, with more bubbly falling mid basses layered over them. This song is one of the more production driven songs on the album as opposed to lyrically.

Gluttony (feat. Grim Steez)

I had a really hard time trying to figure out the best way to approach the style of this track. I assumed that this was going to be one of the easier songs to create on the album, but the process to start it was a constant back and forth. I went through a lot of different trial and error WIP’s and scrap lyrics trying to figure out which direction I wanted to take the song in, but definitely looked to ‘The Weeknd’s’ music for inspiration while creating this. I finally sat down one night and made it, and it ended up coming together faster than any song I had ever created. This single is important to me because it gives an amazing depiction of a Mantra Sounds x Grim Steez collab. The album as a whole was a great interpretation of the collab project but this song specifically hones in on how the two work together as a pair. This song has definitely secured a spot for being one of my favorites on the album.

This was the very first song I created for the album on Thanksgiving Day 2020, not even realizing that it would be used for the album. I originally had the project file named “Thankful WIP”, but when my friend John listened to it, he described it as “something you would listen to when you’re on your way to kill everyone you love” (lol). Even though this ended up being the first song started on the album, it happened to be the last one finished. This is the most thought through song on the album production wise and I feel it fits the criteria for “Wrath” to a T. As I divulged deeper into producing the track, I wanted to portray the image of an obsessive or crossed lover taking their infatuation a step too far within the recorded sounds and movement of the track that could be visually portrayed in a music video. I wanted the recorded sounds such as the knocking, muffled screams, knife sharpening, etc. to make you feel as if you are in the mind and shoes of the killer before, during and after the execution.

The “Forbidden Fruit Intro” piece is the literal representation of me picking up a pencil to dive into the creation of “The 7 Deadly Sins” album. This piece was written extremely organically and I knew from the moment that it was written that I wanted it to be the introduction to the album. Going into the making of this album, I knew that the thought process was going to be draining at times; this piece indirectly shows the struggle of trying to figure out the concept of good and evil. I wanted to capture the struggles of impulsivity, the choices you have to speak up and do right, and how you can fall through the cracks while trying to navigate that. I recorded many of the noises accenting the background in order to create a soundscape and visual imagery to compliment the words being spoken. Out of the three spoken word pieces on the album, I believe this one is by far the darkest.
