Progressive House & Beyond

In October 2020, GMJ released his debut solo EP on the Meanwhile imprint. “Mood Medicine” thus provided a tantalising glimpse into the Australian maestro’s musical soul with three original tracks of the highest order. Returning to the EP, a trio of remixes provides new insight courtesy of Paul Kardos, Sebastian Sellares and fellow label-head, Matter.

 

An artist with a rich array of music to his name, Paul Kardos has seen his work featured on such esteemed imprints as Balkan Connection, Soundteller Records and Darin Epsilon’s Perspectives Digital. Making his Meanwhile debut, the Hungarian artist impresses with a deep and powerful reworking of the title track. Intelligently making use of original components central to GMJ’s original, a glorious new melodic theme flows across “Mood Medicine” in sparkling fashion. Redolent in reverb and delay, sonic textures cascade across the left/right spectrum as new arpeggiated sequences and counterpoint phrases emerge in the third movement. A heavy beat and effervescent percussive groove add further to a powerful statement of intent from the Paul Kardos studio.

 

Fresh from the success of his “Dunes at Dawn” EP on Meanwhile, Sebastian Sellares has been at the vanguard of a fresh and modern progressive house sound since a debut for PHW Elements in 2018. Going on to see his music signed to UV, Or Two Strangers and Proton Music, his “Zen State” EP for the latter was a notable highlight in October 2020. Returning to Meanwhile, the Sebastian Sellares remix of “Precipice” oozes class as the familiar bouncing bassline and central melodic theme of the original envelope the listener. Building with ease, white-noise effects pulsate gently alongside a rolling groove and deep resonant kick as melodic sequences filter into sonic range, highlighted by a stripped back and spine-tingling breakdown.

 

Matty Doyle needs little introduction with his Matter production pseudonym. A regular across the finest underground dance imprints from Cid Inc.’s Replug to Roger Martinez’s Higher States and the renowned Balance Music, the Melbourne resident continues to dine at underground dance music’s top table with an inimitable blend of “deep synth lines, driving bass and pulsating rhythms”. November 2020 saw Matter debut on the Meanwhile imprint with his “Amanita” EP as he now returns to remix his friend, production partner and label co-owner. Reworking “Rite of Passage”, a trademark smorgasbord of rich and evocative soundscapes wash over the listener as glistening melodic lines flow enticingly atop. A chorus of effects pan the stereo spectrum in dizzying glory as themes inherent in GMJ’s original reveal themselves with ease. The result is another masterpiece of sonic seduction from the Matter studios.

| From the Middle East to Central America and Russia, a trio of artists blend their talents. Out of the darkness and into the light, Golan Zocher, Gux Jimenez and Mango build a stratified sonic masterpiece from “Only a Shadow”. Subtle organic layers amble through a forest of percussive saplings that sit beneath a towering beat and subterranean groove. Emerging in the dappled moonlit shadows, evocative motifs create an eerie atmosphere before a bassline force springs from the undergrowth and into the open, prowling beneath luscious melody.

Harnessing familiar energies from the darkness, Dowden hypnotises with a new poise and grace. “Only a Shadow” forms in the twilight as white noise crashes in pulsating waves. A mesmerising bassline hits the Toronto streets where it forges a path through pinpricks of melodic light and a seething, rolling rhythmic groove. A pioneering sonic architecture is forged from exquisite St Petersburg and Sao Paulo landscapes. Mariano Favre of Clubsonica fame debuts on Manual Music, introducing DEMIS and their single 'Broken Dreams'.

'Broken Dreams' is a melancholic progressive melodic house track, deep and emotional but very dancefloor friendly. Manual Music label boss Paul Hazendonk teams up with KAMADEV once again adding a proper dosage of funk to the table, whilst DOMA will please the progressive house lovers with their remix.

Kamilo Sanclemente, Carol Brown - Spirals Inflections (Simply City Remix) [ABORIGINAL]

'Returning to Proton Music, Janko Dragovic has created a powerful narrative with his Desaturate production moniker. Reaching a notable highlight in January 2018 with his "Wanderer" EP, the Serbian artist now creates another moment of magic with "Spinal Slip". Joining forces with production partner, Goran Ferenc for the second original track on the EP, the duo's Dual Flux soubriquet provides another sonic highlight via "Ground Zero". Remixes comes from iconic Croatian and Belarusian artists Petar Dundov and Michael A.

Another familiar name to the Proton Music roster, Michael A has continued to play a central role with a half-century of credits that has witnessed an abundance of original releases that included the likes of "Symbol", "Aura Tears" and "Geometria" between 2017 and 2019. Beginning the "Fantasy" series in September 2020 with an array of original new music, "Vol. 3" is set to hit the shelves in early 2022. A clutch of remixes for the likes of Dousk, James Monro and Pole Folder adding to his portfolio, the Michael A remix of "Ground Zero" takes the driving techno character of the original and transforms it into a lilting progressive gem. Glistening with flowing new melodic phrases that shimmer across the left-right soundstage, elements from Dual Flux's original intelligently sit in the opulent surroundings of Michael's production work, while a strong beat and ticking percussion add club credentials.'

'Returning to the label and providing the first interpretation of 'Perfect Love' is Paul Deep (AR). With a career that spans the better part of a decade, the Argentinean artist has compiled an impressive resume along the way, landing releases via All Day I Dream, Tale and Tone and The Soundgarden. World class DJs Lee Burridge, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren have all been steadfast supporters of Paul's sound, which often sits in the creative space between progressive and organic house. Having been an integral part in Clubsoncia's formative years, Paul provided two singles and a remix across 2016-2018. Now getting 2022 underway in style, the Buenos Aires resident makes a welcome return to the label with a stunning rendition of 'Perfect Love'. Atop a warm, well contoured groove comes devilish effects, neatly tailored percussion and ethereal vocal gates. Emerging atmospheres add depth and space leading into the main break, phasing in and out of coherence as the full vocal sits gently below the surface. It's a remarkable sonic marriage sure to captivate listeners and dance floors alike, before perfectly segueing into a buoyant final movement.'

We turn to Russia, and Warpp club resident, Bondarev, for our next outing. The title track "The Warpp", named after the club, is a deep and hypnotic affair with subtle synth layers, acidesque squelches, and moody pads.

Following on is "Manshivaan", a more direct track which brings the energy up with its chunky drums and heavy sub-bass.

Fellow Warpp residents Ewan Rill and K Loveski takes on remix duties for "The Warpp" and turns the original deep track into a progressive peak-time bomb!

Wrapping things up is Argentina's Mayro, who returns to Lowbit after his successful original EP released earlier this year and molds "Manshivaan" into a big and chunky floor filler.

Renowned Buenos Aires-based DJ/Producer Sebastian Busto makes his label debut with December and The Miracle, and the label enlists the remix talents of Dmitry Molosh, Zankee Gulati and Lèrr to create an array of stunning interpretations across another exceptional 5-track onedotsixtwo package.

The pulsating energy of 'December' is immediately mesmerising as Sebastian Busto creates the perfectly beautiful dreamy atmosphere that he is renowned for. Elegantly layered melodies float and flow with flawless precision, as his unique musical vision is showcased magnificently. Celebrated for his inimitable progressive sound, Dmitry is at the forefront of the new wave of the current scene as one of its most talented forward thinking electronic artists. His stunning remix is fuelled with funk and fire to create an utterly enthralling ride fuelled with rising anticipation and spine-tingling euphoric elation. 

Through his love of exploring progressive realms of music, the Sydney-based Australian DJ/Producer Zankee Gulati is rapidly making his mark on the scene. A blossoming production career has already seen him exhibit his immense talents on the likes of Clinique, Soundteller, Particles, Visceral, Balkan Connection, and most recently, The Soundgarden. His remix of December has seen exclusive early support from Hernan Cattaneo on his Resident radio show, and it is easy to see why. Deeply hypnotic and with a wonderfully intricate arrangement this is masterfully melodic music of the highest order.

Completing this expansive 5-track package is an utterly blissful remix of The Miracle courtesy of Lèrr. This Montenegrin DJ/Producer is recognised for his unique style combining groovy, deep, melodic, progressive vibes. His enchanting musical creations have appeared on Balkan Connection, Sound Avenue, Asymmetric, Trndmsk and more so far in 2020, and his deeply delicious reworking of The Miracle stands out as one of his finest yet.
