Opening 2022's final quarter, Cid Inc's Replug Records welcomes Mike Griego back to the label for a new EP. Based in Buenos Aires, the Argentinean DJ and producer has carved out a unique place in the electronic underground. His exacting design, addictive grooves and avant-garde melodies have made for a transcendent sound that continues to unify dancefloors around the world. With a career that now approaches fifteen years and one hundred discography credits, Mike would have to be considered one of progressive music's elite artists. A meticulous discography reflects his choosy nature; with Replug and Sudbeat serving as the primary landing spots for his musical output. With 2021 being highlighted by his most recent Replug vehicle ‘Dysbiosis', the Argentine made a much-lauded return to Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music earlier this year with ‘Foreign Affair', before laying down impressive renditions of Kasper Koman's ‘In Circles' and Dmitry Molosh & Navar's ‘Foreign Wonders', released c/o Juicebox Music and Proportion respectively. Now, continuing what has been a great year, Mike returns to Replug with a three-track showcase entitled ‘Flying Doves'. 

As a favourite of Replug label boss Cid Inc across the summer season, EP opener and title selection ‘Flying Doves' finds Mike at his creative best. Shot in high-definition and full of detail and drive, it's an emotive voyage where the Buenos Aires resident flexes his freethinking muscles and lands comfortably in-between groove-centric science and hopeful musicality. The inevitable zenith of this peak-time excursion mounts with nostalgic melodies and balmy harmonics converging, achieving a rich, colourful timbre over a bed of pulsating beats and fascinating percussion arrangements. 

More enigmatic yet is the EPs second selection 'Brothi'', a creation which finds Mike etching towards a darker monochrome. Plush kick drums and voluptuous bass stabs lead to electrified iterations of new age sonics. Cleverly cadenced coactions underpin a fascinating blend of pyrotechnic effects, before segueing into the main break where metallic melodies and effervescent rides unite, setting the course for a finale of rebounding rhythms and surreal sonic aesthetics.

The third and final selection 'Blood Echo' further solidifies Mike's transcendent abilities. Possessing a dramatic undercurrent, the Argentine works hypnotizing structures over punchy kick drums and detailed percussion, creating waves of locomotive meditation. Its thrilling pulse has become a production hallmark for Mike, one where inventive drum patterns, mesmerizing rhythms and quixotic effects carry the storyboard onwards to a thunderous dance floor awakening. A fitting conclusion to a fresh three-track odyssey, one where Mike carefully balances technique and musicality, thus continuing his tenure as one of Argentina's most beloved progressive house producers.

Deepwibe Underground opens the month of May by welcoming Dmitry Molosh back to the label for a new EP. Having established a bond with the Estonian imprint in 2021, Belarusian artist Dmitry Molosh has made the label one of his primary landing spots. Since making his Deepwibe Underground debut Dmitry has recorded seven originals and four remixes for the label, while also delivering five remixes for the label’s organic offshoot -102C. The last two calendar years saw the progressive phenom at his creative best, releasing collaborative projects alongside fellow genre stars Cid Inc and Navar, while continuing to build his own Proportion Records imprint. Now, as we approach 2023’s summer season, Dmitry returns to Deepwibe Underground for a two-track showcase entitled ‘Flaws’.

I’m not sure I ever remember Dmitry doing a full vocal track but he has here with the lead selection ‘Flaws’ and it’s turned out beautifully. Punchy beats and a full, rolling groove set the foundation for sweeping melodies and an emotive vocal, the latter of which gets used just enough to make it feel like a full vocal track but not too much where you wish it there was less of it. The main break in particular does this very well, as it focuses primarily on the main melodic themes, while the vocal is ultimately used a bridge into the a well crafted drop and then an uplifting vocal-infused finale.

The companion piece ‘Secret’ continues the groovy lean of the release and lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Smooth and effortless throughout, it’s a foundation of warm pulsating beats and chunky bass stabs which set the course for catchy chord stabs, effervescent effects and panoramic synths to captivate leading into the break. Rather than creating a typical ‘breakdown moment’, Dmitry uses tasteful modulation in a classy and concise manner to elevate tension across the brief interlude, a production choice which should prove effective at keeping the dancefloors undivided attention, while also maintaining that groovy energy which flows into a buoyant finale. It rounds out what proves to be one of Dmitry’s more interesting releases of late, one where you get to hear something a bit different from the veteran artist, all while still keeping in that cool progressive style for which he has become so beloved. Don’t miss it.

Following his massive release ‘Strange World’ earlier this year, Czech producer Dominik Gehringer returns to Purified, teaming up with Ovadia for their ‘Digital Age’ EP. Entering a futuristic realm through spoken word vocoders, heavy percussion and soaring synths, the producers explore a cacophony of sounds in the title track. Delivering a peak time cut, Dominik leads audiences on an energetic journey throughout a hybrid and impactful soundscape in his second offering ‘Dance With Me’.

The ‘Digital Age’ artwork showcases a striking image of a blacktip shark, captured by Daniel Nicholson. Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) are powerful predators found in tropical and subtropical waters, playing a key role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems by regulating prey populations. These sharks are known for their distinctive black-tipped fins and their remarkable agility, often leaping out of the water during feeding frenzies. Unfortunately, overfishing and habitat degradation are threatening their populations. The Shark Research Unit, (@sharkresearchunit / shark-research.com), is conducting critical studies on shark behavior, ecology, and conservation to protect these vital species and ensure the health of ocean ecosystems.

Located on the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, Daniel Nicholson is one of the globe’s most prominent professional underwater photographers. He seeks to share the beauty and magic of the underwater world to inspire conservation and change.
