Looking for praise 
An ante always raised 
Doing the right things 
For the wrong reasons 
It’s no secret 
Why we have no relationship 
You’re stuck in a mindset
passed down for generations 
One I inherited 

The apple can only fall so far
From the diseased tree 
I’m starting a new grove
And you already know
Those roots will be stronger
Than any you could imagine 
With a mind so fragile
A heart so shriveled 

Dopamine deficient
Ever so lenient
Pop the pills
Share them for the thrills 
Doing the right things
For the wrong reasons 

Unable to see the hypocrisy 
Unable to see the lunacy 

Keep them roped in tight
Confused as to why they should fight 
Paint me in poor light
To argue isn’t worth my time 

Someone is always caught in the middle
Feeling so helpless and little 

Make the calls
Plant your seeds
It will never be me
Who is seen
It will never be you
That I need

Validate yourself until the cows come home
An explanation is something I never owed
Seek it externally 
As you always have
Unable to give yourself the love

Stumbling in the dark,
I found a brand new spark
Utterly remarkable 
For my broken heart

For all eyes to see
with limited handling 
But that’s not how love works

I’m suited up with a shovel trying to clean
Up scenes from my past
which into, you’ve crashed. 

I’m sure my son has so many questions that
he can’t ask.
Releasing my guilt is such a task.

And in the morning when
my son is rambunctious
my anxiety rose 
in fear of waking the man
whose heart I stole

For a moment I began to second guess-
But then you rolled over and said

“Honey, I’ve slept in war zones.

So, I hope you know.
It isn’t too much for me
you both.

I finally feel at home
At peace
Part of a family
I waited so long for 
One I never thought I’d have

You don’t need to brace for impact. 
I have your back.

And I’ll hold on tight when you aren’t feeling alright.”

Suddenly, I wasn’t so scared
In that bed that we all shared
Once little feet came scurrying to wake me
At 6am to start it all over again

When I see him on your shoulders
Or sleeping in your arms
When I see the way you look at him
There’s warmth in my heart 
It feels foreign to a degree
But with each day that passes
I feel more free
I feel more like me

For a moment I began to second guess-
But then you rolled over and said
