Weeks ago, along a river
I walked alone, you were still here

Lately I can’t sleep, I wake before the alarm
My head’s been swimming, getting to know the sharks
Took a pre-dawn walk, the streets already lit
Picked fights with her stars, the night it came and went

I’m tired and wired so sleep won’t come easy now
I’m a fuck-up but funny, I’ll slip right by your guards
Let’s swim with the sharks tonight

Got off the subway, got to know the avenues
Dragged my thoughts down the streets, painted them all blue
Danced with the bartenders, stomached their taste of whine
Left change on the counter, traded sun for the streetlights

Thomas sits and watches the planes
While he’s parked near the freeway
He’s got nowhere to go
No one to see  

He thinks a lot about taking off
About where he’d go
How he’d ditch the car
He’d start a whole new life out by the sea

Guess he wouldn’t really need the house
Could leave the mess
Could be the boss
He always saw romance in a bindle

He could see the world through the window
Eat strange foods
Be a vagabond
Days on the road, nights skies from the beach

We should all get on a plane
Take it to a new day

If he flew backwards, maybe he’d rewrite time
Choose the right sides
He could keep the wife
He could say the right thing or just walk away

But when you change your path, you choose the strange
You lose guidance
Make new mistakes
You lose the trail when you thought you knew the way

We should all get on a plane

Throw each life away like a crumpled page
We should try new hair, we should wear new names
Find new ways to step out of ourselves
We could treat time like a broken clock
Learn to stomach and absorb the shock
That there’s a whole world out beyond ourselves

By the time the chemtrails fade
