Marbs, one of the head honcho's of Desert Hearts Black and having many releases on the label, as well as on KATERMUKKE. While Michael returns here, after recent musical outings on Sprout, Renaissance and Nightcolours.

This twisted peak time slab of filthiness, really packs a punch, with its grittiness shining through its throbbing vibes. Lots of cool vocal samples adding additional wonkiness, for a real wobbly banger!

Marbs & Michael Hooker - Control Warning

It was such an honor and a privilege to be invited back to play this legendary venue in Berlin. Sisyphos was celebrating their anniversary with their 'Hippyphos' week-long celebration. I played on the Strand (beach) stage from 19:00-22:30, it was ripping with tons of beautiful people in the moment, and it was one of my favorite sets I've played this year. After not being in Berlin for over 3 years due to the pandemic this was an incredibly special experience for me and I'm so grateful to have returned for my 3rd time playing at one of my favorite venues in the world. 

Thank you to everyone that danced with me, celebrated this incredible space, and got lost in the music... and a big thank you to Sisyphos for welcoming back. I'll remember this experience forever. 

We had to cut off the recorder for the last 30 minutes of my set for the next act to get ready, but here's 3 hours of gritty, groovy, techno, techy goodness. I'm grateful to share this with you and I hope you enjoy the experience.

Introduction 158 | Marbs

It’s been a long time since I sat down and actually put together a mix outside of Live recordings and shows. It felt good to put something together that really focused on the music that resonates with me so deeply. Finding one’s sound is a life long journey and within this mix I really focused on showing everyone the sound I've been building towards so diligently. A long time ago a good friend heard me spin at Kava Lounge in San Diego and told me a powerful quote that sits well with my music, “It's easy to find your way in the light, but within darkness is where we truly get lost.”

To me when I first got into electronic music and saw live shows the act of “getting lost” in the music is what made it so special to me. The layering of instruments infinitely throughout a set, not knowing what tracks were playing, and that freedom within the sound is what got me so addicted to this music in the first place.

This mix was made to reflect that story and this moment within my journey, so grab some headphones, relax, and get lost with me  <3

Life is all about balance. There is no light without darkness, there is no day without night, there is no good without bad … the yin and the yang. This mix explores these concepts and inspired me to start a podcast, or mix series, based on the yin and yang theory of life. The first edition to this series explores sounds that I love, but if you were to remove these tracks out of the mix and compare them to each other most would sound totally different emotionally. I think there’s something beautiful about that. This one leans more towards the Yin side of the theory … a little dark, a little earthy, deep, and great for winter weather. At the same time you will find beauty, light, and calmness within it. It has everything from deep house, techno, and rock to everything in-between. This is why the yin and yang theory inspired me to begin a series of mixes to express the various types of sounds I love so much and how they are all related to each other. I hope you enjoy the first edition <3

Beating Hearts - YIN/YANG - 01

The Yin and Yang. A kind of logic viewing things in relation as a whole. The original concept was used to observe nature and the environment. YIN was viewed as the shady side of a slope while YANG was the sunny side. The theory expanded over time and was used to describe the relationship between various things in life … sky and earth, day and night, water and fire, the list goes on. The idea is that there would be no YIN without the YANG and that life is all about balance. The new mix series applies this theory to music. The YIN side being more deep, dark, melodic, and emotional, while the YANG side is more energetic, driving, and moving. Here we have the second episode, leaning more towards the YANG side.  It’s a live recording of my set during our first stop on the Winter Tour at The Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles. Play it loud and take a trip with us back to that very first night of mayhem. Enjoy!

Music. The universal language. It's the one thing that can evoke a feeling so unexplainable that it becomes an obsession and a necessity. Without any words, pictures, smells, or explanations it can make you feel, it can change your day, it can make you smile, it can make you cry … music should make you feel something, shouldn’t it? The 3rd episode of my Yin & Yang Balance mix series is the first of the series that sits somewhere between the Yin and the Yang. It focuses on combining different feelings, hence the name “The Merge Mix.” The series’ goal is to provide music that isn’t always exactly the same, but rather explore the many sounds and reaches of house, techno, love, and emotions. Time to see what’s in there … For this mix I focused on meshing moods and further evolving the Yin & Yang project. It digs deep and travels to the weird, bizarre, sexy, groovy, techie goodness that I’m so obsessed with. The focus was to combine natural and organic sounds with more urban and club grooves. It explores everything from deep and dark to colorful and happy. The balance between man and nature has always been an interest of mine and with all the craziness in the world right now it’s nice to get lost in some music. There’s no better way to turn on and tune out than an old fashion sonic voyage. Enjoy!

There's always something special in the air when we let our hair down behind the Desert Hearts DJ Booth. This year was no exception for me. A lot of emotion and hard work lead up to this year's DH. The heavy tour schedule, as well as scaling back to one festival per year, magnified the importance of this Desert Hearts to our community. It was the usual reset that it always provides to us. That moment when all there is IS the moment. Well, here's that moment for me, when everything disappears. I'm very excited to be able to release this Live set and my heart is full as I share this experience with you. Thanks to everyone who danced and celebrated together. You have no idea how much it means to me.

Desert Hearts’ mix, assembled by Marbs, shows how the partners approach an entire night of programming: traveling the rainbow bridge, the swaying road between the realms of body jackin’ and mind expanding. The selections feature a spectrum from tweaked-out house heaters to super-driving and spacey techno bangers, with all manner of burbling, bleary, serotonin-replenishing crowd-movers in between. “You’ll certainly begin somewhere and end somewhere entirely different,” says Marbs. “Let’s take the ride together, and remember to keep exploring.”

A shadow on a hot summer day, diving into a lake after a long hike, a breath of fresh air after being inside for too long, and all those little things we love so much. This one’s inspired by those feelings. I’ve been playing a lot of high energy tech house and techno at gigs lately. Which I’ve been loving ;) but this collection of tracks is much deeper, more melodic, and more emotional. I love the stories music can tell and this one is a different story. When we planned out our festival set times, we knew we wanted Marbs to set the tone at 2am on Saturday night right before Damian Lazarus. Marbs set the tone by practically stealing the show that night. We can't tell you how much we love this dude and we're grateful everyday to have him as a partner and leader in our community. Mind of Marbs: Volume 001

For this installment, I went a lot deeper than I’ve gone in a while. 

Inspired by the first heavy rain this winter, I found myself imagining a story about Rebirth, Life & Death, and the Infinite Flow of things being created as other things are destroyed. 

The accompanying art pieces shape a visual for this narrative. The whole idea of the project is to tell stories through music and art together in singularity.

Mind of Marbs: Volume 002

For this episode I decided to do something different and release my 6+ hour LIVE Recording from Bar Américas in Guadalajara.

There's something special about this venue. I've played there twice now and the energy is completely electric. They love techno and it seems that I can get as dark, weird, progressive, techy, or anything else I'm feeling while on the journey with them. That freedom and trust on a dancefloor is something unexplainable. This one was a marathon and it travels to a lot of different corners.

The accompanying art piece was inspired by the energy that night and the easily recognizable neon LED grid on the low rise ceiling above the crowd.

What's Up Desert Hearts Family?

Over the past seven years that we've been throwing this festival, Marbs and Evan Casey have always been at the forefront of delivering darker sounds to our beloved dance floor. So when they wanted to do a 4 hour b2b rinse into sunrise to end our Saturday DH block, you know we were down.

This year they absolutely tore the stage apart with ripping basslines, emotional melodies, and otherworldly moments. It was a journey to say the least.

So today, on the heels of the second single off their inaugural release on Desert Hearts Black, we proudly present to you their set from the festival this year.

In Marbs own words: "We’ve been getting hit up left and right with questions about when mine and Evan Casey’s B2B set from @deserthearts will be released, finally that wait is over. Today we unleash the full 4 hours for everyone to relive and we couldn’t be more excited to do so. This set was very special to us and there was a lot  of intention and energy building up to it. 

"We’ve become close friends over the last couple years, he lived with me for awhile, he asked me to be his best man in his wedding, we’ve been creating a ton together, and we just started a new passion project, @desertheartsblack, a new sub label for our community focused on the darker and deeper sounds we all enjoy. There was definitely a lot of energy going into this moment.

It's been a long time since I've done one of these. I have been so focused on Desert Hearts Black and making music that I set this project aside for a little while. We're going through some unprecedented times right now and it's left people uncertain, isolated, and scared so I thought it would be a perfect time to start this back up. Music and art have always been catalysts that transport me to distant places with heightened feelings, positive emotions, and peace of mind. 

That's what the intention of this mix is; to take you on a trip while you're stuck at home. Some of it is beautiful, some of it is dark, and a lot of it is somewhere in the middle. It's trippy and eclectic, but driving and sexy; focusing on the range of electronic music that I love. It includes everything from Four Tet and Robag, to Mind Against and Dubfire. I’ve also included my new EP, “Psilo,” which drops this Friday on Desert Hearts Records.

Mind of Marbs : Volume 004

Born in Southern California, Marbs was an artistic child who found influence in the sounds of Pink Floyd and Tool, as well as Hip Hop, Reggae, and Rock, displaying his love for all genres at an early age. In high school he discovered and explored electronic music; diving into DJing during this time, he was led to the infamous Lovefest in San Francisco, where he discovered Lee Burridge and was forever motivated by that set. Shortly after, he witnessed Plastikman live and the combination of those two experiences laid the foundation for the sound he’s been creating ever since.

After years of DJing in the Southern California and Burning Man circuits, Marbs and the Desert Hearts crew decided to throw their own party, built on love & acceptance, grounded in House & Techno. What was once a gathering of 200 people has since turned into one of the most recognized boutique festivals in the world, none of which could have ever been possible without Marbs, truly the backbone of the project. 

As Desert Hearts catapulted into the scene as a major player, Marbs continued to hone his production, finding breakout years in 2019 and 2020 as he hit #1 on Beatport's Top 100 Releases with “Torus," the debut EP on his Desert Hearts Black imprint, along with chart-topping EP releases “Psilo” and “Beyond the Wall."

With a magnetic personality, relentless determination, and a heart of gold, Marbs is a true leader in the community, embodying Desert Hearts mantra: House, Techno, and Love.
