I got to a point to where I listened to nothing but the original "Pallar Anders Visa" from In Flames on my commute to work, at work, and from work.

I amused myself by looking for an "8-bit NES" version of this song just to see how it sounds, and found one on YouTube by user wMatteo. Being a real stickler for how NES remixes sound, I was terribly disappointed. So, I decided to make one of my own.

This is the first version I made, using OpenMPT, an Amiga music module editor. "ver.A" strictly follows the number of voices that the NES can produce simultaneously: 2 square wave channels and 1 triangle wave channel. Needless to say, it seems to be lacking, due to the inadequate amount of polyphony the 3-channel set up has to offer. I will eventually write a "ver.B" that maintains the NES-like instruments, but expands the channels to as many channels needed to make a more faithful composition.

Pallar Anders Visa - 8-bit ver.A (2A03 3-channel)

This is probably my most favorite song in Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U, so I decided to write an 8-bit version of it!

The syncopation of this song was a bitch to deal with...I did what I could, but it's not bad for the first try.

The song was written in MMC5 mode for the extra two Square Wave voices.

Hisstocrat Appears on the NES!

This was a song I wrote back when I was still in college. 

Admittedly, this song was heavily inspired by a song I had heard from a video game I own, so it may sound pretty similar, but I honestly wrote it from the heart.

The MIDI editor I used to write the song ("Recording Session" from MIDISoft) was not very easy to use. It used a musical music sheet interface, where you plot the notes along a staff. I was taught how to read music in grade school, so I was able to follow along well enough. The hard part came when I needed to do something more elaborate, like more precise note timing and duration, and effects like vibrato and note bending. That was controlled by writing code, so writing music was quite time-consuming (Imagine how hard it is to write a guitar solo in code!!!). This is why pretty much all of the songs I wrote in MIDI were never finished.

Anyway, this is the first of many. I'll post more while I convert them from MIDI to MP3.

Hey Daydreamer! (Unfinished, 1999)

Another (incomplete) MIDI composition. 

It's an orchestral re-imagining of a song from the NES game "Ninja Gaiden II". The song plays during a very sinister scene, with the game's antagonist setting his evil plan in motion at the top of his fortress, while a thunderstorm looms over them. The NES is only so capable, so I decided to write the song with "a bit" more drama.

Chaosium Sword - Orchestra Arragement (2000)

Hot after I had MIDI-resequenced "WWIII" from SNK's arcade game "King of Fighters '99," I started replaying Capcom's "Bionic Commando" for GameBoy when I realized that the drumline used in WWIII could work perfectly with one of the songs in Bionic Commando, particularly the song used in the stage, labeled "Area 0."

After I had resequenced the GameBoy song and added the drums from WWIII, I was really happy that I was right.

Yet another unfinished MIDI.

This was inspired by "Touch and Go!!" by Megumi Hayashibara, a song used in an anime I was watching around that time, Blue Seed. Hayashibara's song was using a lot of minor chords, which made the song sound a bit sad, so I wrote mine to contrast that. It was obviously done with less skill, but I was fine with it at the time because it conveyed a happier tone.

Love The Autumn (Unfinished, 1999)

This was an "image" song to go along with one of the many character concepts I had for a fighting game.

"Pearl" is a codename for a member of an all-female group of assassins, who use their beauty and fashion sense as cover for their high-risk, high-reward missions. I felt that "runway" music was a good fit for this kind of character.

"Theme Of 'Pearl'" (Original BGM for fighting game, Unfinished) (2000)

I have avoided posting most of my MIDI resequences of videogame BGM because they are mostly faithful reproductions of the original composition. I made an exception for this one because it's one of my most favorite BGMs of all time. Not entirely because it's a great composition, but because I have a great 7th Grade memory of a friend playing this song on the keyboard LIKE A BOSS. 

In The Sky Over Gotham City (from Batman for Sega Genesis) - MIDI Arrange (1999)

This song was inspired by the many beat-em-up games I've played in my youth. Double Dragon II, Ninja Gaiden, and Final Fight were probably the prominent inspirations for this song.

Dark Wind - Boss Theme (Original BGM for beat-em-up game) (2001)

This was my first attempt at playing with FamiTracker's VRC7 chipset emulation. While there were limitations in the chipset's polyphony, the sound came out all right. Unfortunately, the chipset wasn't able to pump out much in the low-end frequencies, so I boosted the bass after I converted the file from FTM to MP3.

Fantasy Zone - Boss Battle - VRC7 Club Edit #2

So, I basically created this song because I needed to illustrate to one of my friends that Kylie Minogue's "Closer" from her album, "Aphrodite," could sound like a BGM from a Castlevania game.

Here was a song I did in the mid 90s with my first tracker, ModEDIT for DOS. Most of the percussive sounds and the voices used in this song was sampled from Bullet Proof Software's "Faceball 2000," a game I played on the Super Nintendo.

The Faceball Jam (1996)

This is a resequence of the theme song for Geese Howard, one of the characters from Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu, a series of fighting games released in the 90s/2000s from SNK Japan.

Since I used this song for part of the soundtrack for one of the many home movies I did with my friends in Canada, it has always had a special meaning of badassery for me. Over the years, SNK made many versions of this song. I really liked some of them, but there were other versions that I didn't. I decided to take the parts of the versions I liked, and I mashed them together to make this mix.

I did this using a MIDI program on the PC and used some custom wavetables to enhance the sound. I also added some post-production reverb to soften some of that manufactured sound that MIDI makes on a modest sound card.
