This mix is dedicated to opening. I had the good fortune to open for two fantastic events @Qaotiq-sf and Ever Afters - this mix contains a lot of tracks from the former with some new stuff I’ve been on sprinkled in there. I’ve found that opening allows for a little more creative freedom, giving space for a borderless dynamic. Attempting to recapture the essence felt on the floor is a fool’s errand, but I tried my best to record this while putting myself in that headspace. 

Been sitting on @MattBrownell’s words that opening for special events is a lot like being a Master of Ceremonies. Setting the table for the night. Imagine I’m watching people fill into the open floor, slowly welcoming attendees to the beautiful digital sound forest created by Envelope Soundsystem and @loafbkr. The beats are spaced out in parts, moody, up-tempo moments that come and go. (My happy place, tbh) The night is early, there’s a long way to go, and here is the first leg of your journey.

THEATH*MANNING, The Bronze Cup

A few months ago I had the very real pleasure to play a morning set for Chiilits 2023. Been meaning to post this for a while, but you know, life and all that. I was sitting listening to it with my sister and she was like, what am I waiting for? Anyway, this leans pretty dark for a morning set, as there are tendrils from the night before, following up dear friends with darker sets. Just where my headspace was at. It was incredibly special to spend that weekend with so many generous hearts and ears. Love to my camp crew, new friends, and especially to the Chillits committee for the opportunity. <3

Chillits 2023 Morning Mix

Golden Mitres consists of six guitar and synth drones that were recorded during the months of October and November 2023 in San Francisco while grieving the death of a close family member. Golden mitres marks 15 years since the 2008 release of "A skeleton, soon and then forever" on Dragon's eye recordings. While "A skeleton, soon and then forever" addressed the underlying notion that life is only a fraction of the time that the body endures on earth, with the songs attempting to communicate the insight that our bodies will in fact be skeletons for most of their existence, Golden mitres speculates more on the etherial spirit rather than the physical body. The recording's dark psychedelic atmosphere attempts to investigate something more spiritual and ambiguous. The titles of the songs refer to absence and departure, while the title of the album suggests a meditation on something sublime. "Skeletons" received most of its tone and character thanks to a very unstable hand made tube amp from the 60's, fancy microphones, and hot over wound guitar pickups. Golden mitres picks up the thread where "Skeletons" left off by utilizing the same, but now more aged and worn, amplifier, and a homemade guitar, fitted with a similar over wound pickup, to achieve a sparse and deeply melancholic mood. The addition of synths adds some atmosphere without overshadowing the guitar as the main texture. This recording is intended to accompany an exhibit of Marc Manning's embroidered artworks in Yucca Valley CA in March -April 2024.

In German culture, "Ostalgie" is nostalgia for aspects of life in DDR. It is a portmanteau of the German words Ost (east) and Nostalgie (nostalgia).

His work is heavily influenced by his gay perspective, Italian futurism, abstraction, theoretical physics, and German expressionism. In both his visual and audio works he explores the possibilities of sound, color, charged symbols abstraction to summon complex emotions; a synergistic living cauldron of sound.
