WINGS, for Solo-Flugelhorn & Brass Band (Fanfare Orchestra)

WINGS was composed spontaneously in December 2023, but the idea for a Flugelhorn-Solo piece had been around for a while, a good five years to be precise.

Back then (2018), I was lucky enough to experience twelve of the best brass bands in Europe at the EBBC in Utrecht (my composition Time for Outrage! was a compulsory piece that year).

I noticed that the flugelhorn (although only played once in the brass band) was able to assert itself in many passages with its unique sound in an outstanding and strikingly clear manner.
So I thought to myself that the combination of solo-flugelhorn with brass band accompaniment should actually work very well.

The idea for WINGS (Flügel) was born.

WINGS is a tonal piece in A-B-A form, with a memorable main theme, a somewhat more animated middle section, which is then led to a climax (A-theme), before the piece ends in a calm, relaxed atmosphere.
The flugelhorn part in the band is optional, so that the piece can also be performed without a second flugelhorn player (external soloist).
