Deep Duck

After SquareSounds Tokyo I picked up a copy of LSDj and tried to make my first chiptune. This was the result after one sleepless night.

Original: Bad Apple!! feat. Nomico by Alstroemeria Records (Based on Bad Apple!! from 東方幻想郷　～ Lotus Land Story by ZUN)

Since I don't have a Game Boy nor can I easily get a GB flash cart in a pinch, it was indeed done on a rather bad Game Boy: a Nintendo DS. Since the DS can't run GB software I had to use an emulator. I ended up composing it using lameboy running in DS mode (which runs at full speed but has questionable audio software emulation) and then using a patched up, self-compiled version of Goomba in GBA mode to play it back (which has questionable performance issues but uses the native GBA sound hardware which is compatible with Game Boy audio, and sounds better; with the patch I was able to load a full 128k LSDj savefile).

Embarrassingly, I ended up playing it on the open mic at the afterparty...
