Shotamate - I composed the lyrics and melody to this song for my dad. Shotamate is a very special phrase that dad used when we were growing up. He said that it was Korean for “Take it easy.” He would whisper it to us at night before we would go to bed especially if we were upset about something. As we got older it became a magical phrase to invoke in times of need, when feeling stressed or sad. It could be said that it had magical powers for calming and healing. I tried to find the phrase in the Korean language but was only able to find a phrase that was close but not the same. It doesn’t really matter. Shotamate is a special invocation in the language of love.

This is Paul Gehman’s The Hole Thing. He will be dearly missed. He was a very gifted musician and a beautiful person - gentle, considerate, generous and had a great sense of humor. It was one out of a number of recordings that grew out of informal sessions over a period of a year. We would get together once a week to develop our skills as improvisers and to provide an opportunity for trying out original works or arrangements. We met in Paul’s “bungalow” – a funky carriage-house that reminded us all of our college days and provided a comfortable setting for us to stretch-out and play late into the evening. The players included Eric Dutko on guitar; Paul Gehman on bass; John Mosemann on drums and Bob Meashey on trumpet and myself on flute.
