A rare mix from the originator of Techno, Juan Atkins, as part of the celebration of three decades of Tresor, the German nightclub, label, and institution.

Recorded at the Tresor club in Berlin at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside-down, the mix spans the full spectrum of sub-genres that Techno has evolved into from its beginnings with Juan and his peers in 1980s Detroit. As such the mix is true testament to the genre from one of its founding fathers.

Juan’s classic track I Love You features on the forthcoming Tresor 30 compilation - 52 tracks of classics and exclusive commissions that map the flight path of Techno from the pioneers to the producers of today and tomorrow. This alongside the recent reissue of the seminal 3MB record Juan made alongside Moritz Von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann perfectly encapsulates the long-lasting connection between Juan Atkins and Tresor, between Detroit and Berlin.

The music on offer is richly textured, and though techno's thundering pulse plays a major role in the proceedings, Fengler also finds time to flirt with various house tropes and explore both darkly dubby and brightly melodic passages. Beyond that, the whole thing has been expertly mixed, which comes as little surprise given the man's impressive pedigree.

Dettmann is one of the definitive figures of contemporary German Techno. One of the most iconic performers to grapple with the current standing of Techno music, one needs to review all of the experiences that have placed Dettmann in this position as the spokesperson for the German dance scene. From his first experiences as a record seller in the former East Germany of the late 1990s, to being the go-to representative of Berlin's legendary Hard Wax record shop, he was also resident DJ at the famed club, Berghain. Dettmann has been there at every key moment in the history of German Techno.
Crude, hard, and with no sense of the taboo, Dettmann's mystique is still always shrouded. A living force of the vertical, direct, brutal aesthetic that's proved transcendent around the world, he's been chosen to remix Moderat, Junior Boys, Fever Ray, Ellen Allien, Clark and even the emblematic Laibach in the era after industrial music. His mixes for labels like Fabric, Music Man, and Berghain, are proof of the versatility that always arrives and crushes, upward, with an authentic aesthetic that's timeless and guided by a practical intuition flowing ever forward.

“It was one of those rare occasions when you hear something, you cannot help but think 'where the hell does this come from?” 

So thought Steve Wilson in 1996 as he listened to the two Digital Audio Tapes (DATs) of remixes by Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze of his bands Porcupine Tree and No Man. Wilson chuckled good-naturedly as Jones referred to the remixes as “improvements” over his own musicianship. Actually, Wilson was flattered since Jones, whom he met a week earlier at a Manchester pub, responded both promptly and creatively to promo CD singles passed along as both a gesture and musical calling card. While Wilson found the remixes intriguing, he did not know what to do with them. The DATs held only faint resemblance to the source material, which was smothered in the toxic waste distortion, deft manipulations, and industrial strength beats of Muslimgauze. Perhaps a handful of Wilson's fan base would have 'gotten it', but it would have simply went over the heads of the majority. Wilson rang up Jones and said there was no way he could possibly release this music. The response was yet another DAT a week later titled, the “We cannot possibly release this' remixes”. Wilson then suggested, rather than release remixes, to work on a collaboration which would be the basis of his then-new experimental music project, Bass Communion. Jones agreed and sent original Muslimgauze material which was the basis for the full-length and EP CD's Bass Communion V. Muslimgauze (Soleilmoon 1999 and 2000, respectively). The remix DATs as well as unused material for the collaboration languished in Wilson's studio until the Muslimgauze Preservation Society approached Wilson about bringing the music into the loving homes of Muslimgauze enthusiasts. 

The Muslimgauze Preservation Society are proud to offer you MPS 02, Camel Through A Needles Eye, featuring two discs of unreleased music that clock in at just under three hours. Muslimgauze like you never heard it; a yin/yang of both the abrasive textures and ethereal, beat-driven and ambient—fused into wondrous harmony. To commemorate this release, the MPS sourced covers in Egypt to be hand-printed onto genuine papyrus. A second cover is set amidst a 9 panel fold insert with extensive liner notes on one side, and a fold-open poster featuring Jones' original art work on the other. A bonus sticker of Jones' art work is also included. The music and packaging is all set within a super jewel case to protect this special  edition limited to a run of 500. Quantities are already selling fast!

Everyone's fate is made of many tales. Although our own destiny might be dwelling in our breast, it also takes strong convictions and the courage to challenge yourself. DJ, producer and label manager Marcel Fengler is the best example that talent isn’t just a matter of luck, but the will to believe in your own passions while constantly developing them. Today, Fengler has not only been quoted as „one of the finest techno DJs“ (Resident Advisor), he has earned international respect for his „well-crafted body of production work“ (FACT) introducing his unique and „multi-faceted personality“ (Electronic Beats). 

While growing up, he was first fascinated by the hip-hop culture, breakdance, and graffiti art, Fengler’s interest shifted towards techno music and the art of DJing after the Berlin wall came down. As a vinyl nerd he began playing records during the early nineties. By witnessing Claude Young mixing with three record players, Fengler followed his path merging both hearts in his chest: turntablism and techno. Carried away by the magic and the togetherness of the first hardcore and trance raves in such clubs like E-Werk or Tresor, he organized his own parties in his hometown Fürstenwalde.

Over the last two decades, Fengler developed a versatile and dynamic style of DJing that made him one of the first resident DJs of Berlin’s infamous Berghain / Panorama Bar in 2005. With his impressive intuition for the very moment, Fengler is capable of changing pace, atmosphere, and energy reacting to the mood on the dance floor: whether industrial-drenched hardness, broken beats, gloomy dubs or melodic and funky grooves – next to his inimitable instinct, Fengler draws from a varied repertoire. The approach of allowing to drift away within the momentum also applies to his first singles as a producer on such labels like Ostgut Ton and Mote Evolver. His debut album „Fokus“ (2013), in particular, was a statement of his ambitious claim, awarding his own tracks with emotional densities as well as unexpected contrasts. 

Bringing together both his melodic groove and beat tracks and his straighter cuts, he founded his own imprint Marcel Fengler Index (IMF) in 2011 – a platform that not only continues evolving his timeless techno approach but represents a creative center introducing new and young talents. A logical step for an artist who’s always interested in looking beyond his own nose represented by his project DIN, the mutual collaboration with Philipp Sollmann (Efdemin), for the contemporary dance project „Masse“ of the Staatsballett Berlin. 

As a DJ and producer, Marcel Fengler stands for imposing surprises and the appeal of variety. For him, techno is both unconditional passion as well as an essential part of his identity. He’s not bound to a linear or one-dimensional sound, instead, he’s constantly seeking for new ways to express his emotional storytelling skills. His willingness to challenge himself and to stay curious, while establishing changes as his secret persistence, is showing his true vision of techno which makes Marcel Fengler to one of the today’s most exciting electronic artists in these days.
