The Toast & Jam Remixed series brings 2021 to a close for us with Jackal & Hyde’s Shatter Remixed and a pair of properly massive tunes from the likes of Rennie Pilgrem & Propa Dropa. The Rennie Pilgrem remix takes Shatter in a tech-funk direction while incorporating the original vocoded Jackal & Hyde vocals with a rapid-fire sine wave bassline. Propa Dropa sets up the vibe with a chunky breakbeat drum kit and a low droning bassline, capped off with some arpeggiated synth work for a dark yet uplifting feel. We can’t think of a better combo to close out the year for Toast & Jam!

Mike Walshe aka Irish DJ and producer Satinka debuts on Bonzai Progressive with this stunning three tracker entitled Deep Within EP which is sure to cause waves through the underground. Although a debutant we have seen this guy before, his track The Way Of The Ancients featured on Bonzai's In The Mix 001 mixed by the legend that is Airwave. A relative newcomer to producing he has definitely made a huge impact with his first release over at JOOF with his five track - Dissolving The Fear EP which was followed closely by the equally impressive Everything Is Energy on Geomagnetic. Now residing in Perth, Australia, Mike focuses in on the underground side of Trance, Psytrance and Progressive with his music being supported on many worldwide radioshows.

Deep Within Your Soul intros with a smooth sequence of sounds before bursting out into a full breaks arrangement that captures the imagination right away. Surreal atmospheric sounds flow through the track alongside some very subtle melodies that are just chomping at the bit to be let loose. A deep and driving bassline takes over the sound and is the perfect platform for the track to evolve. A beautifully crafted array of colours and sounds that melt into each other, drawing you in and locking you on for the duration, it's hard to get away from this infectious groove. There's so much more to Deep Within Your Soul than this description, making this a definite must have, you will not be disappointed.

Obscured By Dreams opens with a soft bell and smooth pads with a slight swell that seem to linger on forever. A deep, pounding kickdrum makes its way through delivering a breaks pattern that develops into a strong, solid arrangement complete with crispy hats and long splashy snares. The most beautiful melodies start to form up and contrast well with the tougher drums and gritty bassline. You get a real sense of underground with this expertly crafted collection of sounds, a totally immersive and mesmerizing groove that will have you coming back for more and more. Superb.

Introspection fades into existence with some real nice sounds including a deep droning bass and warm raspy flute. A beautifully melodic guitar soon follows and leads us into the superb, tight breaks arrangement we've been waiting on. Cool vocals are scattered all through this epic monster of a track and bring a little taste of retro to the sound. Again we witness the true power of the underground as Satinka unleashes an obscene array of quality sounds that seem to find common ground in the most fantastic way. Another fine slice of progressive breaks with a hint of almost everything thrown in, absolute genius.

Here it is! My tribute to the late, great John Rodgers aka DJ Gully. One of, if not THE pioneer of the breakbeat sound in Perth, He was kicking around long beforehand, but I first experienced his skills in the very early days (late 2000) of Ambar  and I can honestly say that my love of breaks or breakbeat is a result of him displaying a unique blend of what at the time was an incredibly fresh, underground, yet dancefloor friendly sound. 

Did I know that 13 years later I would still be obsessed and so heavily involved in this style of music? Most definitely not! So with his untimely passing I felt compelled to pay tribute to him and the musical education he instilled upon me that brought me to this time and place. His "Backbeat" night, initially at Ambar, and later at Bar Open played a pivotal role in the development of the scene and culture here in Perth and gave a break, pardon the pun, to many of the people who are now household names around town. Anyone that was there in those days holds those memories very close to their heart and the gift he gave us was, and is, priceless!

I've dusted off my records from that period, and put together a very special 3 hour mix. People talk about the "golden era" of breaks, but are usually referring to 2 or 3 years later. This mix focuses primarily on tunes from 1999-2002, so it's no surprise that Plump Djs and labels like Finger Lickin and TCR feature pretty heavily. 

Please forgive me for what I would now consider fairly simple, and at times, somewhat rough mixing. All the tunes here except for few are played from (very well worn) vinyl as you can hear from that warm, fuzzy sound that you just don't really get to hear these days. I couldn't tell you the last time I pulled a 3 hour session on the Technics, am a little rusty, but hopefully I did it justice and conveyed it adequately and convincingly. At the end of the day, it's about the music and the connection and memories we all feel towards it, just bask in the rawness!

There was a big list compiled by friends and fans with close to 100 tunes that people associate with Gully, I obviously couldn't get through all of them. Some of the ones I didn't have, I tried to track down but remember we are talking about an era where not everyone had the internet, tunes weren't available as a 320, wav or aiff moments after they were finished and records took on average about 6 months to find their way to Australia. You then had to beg, steal and borrow to acquire them before anyone else did! To this day, finding some of those tracks that aren't just a shoddy 128kbps rip from vinyl proves almost impossible! I felt some of the suggestions put forward absolutely should've been in the mix but I just didn't have access to them and wanted to get this out there ASAP.

I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones, he was the sort of guy that noone had a bad word to say about and will be sorely missed by so many! So please, get comfortable, click play and raise a glass in honour of the man responsible for many a dancefloor memory and good time! Much love mate, may your legacy live on and you rest in peace!
