It’s that time of the year again when @HeistRecordings deliver their annual frenzy of collaborations from another years worth of label releases, all wrapped up in one package - ’The Round Up’.  You’ll hear Crackazat taking on the breezy horns of Alma Negra’s standout ‘Dakar Disco’ and Dam Swindle’s re-interpretation of Teleseen’s ‘Dekalb’ full of live drums, wonky arps, and raw synth stabs, plus other classy reworks by Detroit legends Scan 7, @kassiansound , Nebraska and Pitto.

The concept of ‘The Round Up’ is each artist that released on Heist in 2020 gets to remix another artist from that year.  There’s the feel-good festival vibes on Crackazats remix of ‘Dakar Disco’ and the rolling tech goodness of Kassian’s rework of Nebraska’s bonkers ‘Dip & Flip’. Pitto takes us on an excursion into deep dubbed out house with his rework of Kassian’s ‘8th Movement’ and Nebraska goes all UK house meets US garage meets Christopher Walken’s cowbell solo on his remix of ‘Move out the way’ by Dam Swindle.  The label heads bring on house stabs with an atmospheric and pumping remix of Teleseen’s ‘Dekalb’, while the latter goes for a more worldly feel with his remix of ‘Discko’ by Pitto. There’s the superb Detroit house approach from Scan 7 with their remix of Crackazat’s ‘Class one’, plus Alma Negra who add vocal and synth layers to the gospel house killer cut ‘All Of Me’ by Scan 7.

Fouk are back on Heist. Their new Truffles EP is packed with swinging goodness and comes with a jazzy Hugo LX remix.

After a busy period last year, Fouk have taken the time to experiment in their studio, focusing on expanding their sound and releasing only a handful of tunes. Their ‘Mating Call’ EP on their own label Outplay saw them explore the deeper side of things, while remixes for artists like Joey Negro on his own Z Records alongside Ron Trent saw them show off their production skills with a superb hi tech funk track.

On the flip, ‘Need my Space’ sounds like something you’d hear if Pépé Bradock and Charles Webster would get together in the studio: dreamy synth lines, lovely textures and weird electronics over an ever so sexy bassline.

The remix on this EP comes from Parisian artist Hugo LX, whose love for soulful electronic music and jazz are perfectly presented in his remix of ‘I’ll be down’. His version is filled with shimmering leads, synth hits and some lovely horns for good measure. For us, this is a case of jazzy deep house at its best.

PREMIERE: Fouk - I'll Be Down (Hugo LX Meteor Mix) [Heist Recordings]

FINA co-owner Corbi makes his long-awaited debut on the label with three tracks of his playful, inventive house sounds. He has made a notable impact in just a couple of years, with EPs and edgy, in demand edits on Anna Walls The Bricks, Music For Freaks and Morris Audio. 

Opener ‘Samurai’ continues in that rich vein, with seven sublime minutes of dreamy house. It’s awash with gorgeous chords and vocals, adding to the escapist effects of a truly lush track. The smooth ‘Access Serenity’ slows things down, with loose drum tumbles, summery and Balearic string sounds and exotic, tropical percussion that take you direct to the beach. Last of all, ‘Warp’ with J33 reworks a cult classic with driving, elastic drums and bass and the original’s deadpan vocal style. Add in curious whistles and the whole perfectly off-balance groove is sure to get big reactions.

Newly born label and Berlin-based collective Get Together drops her first release with its GTVA series: 4 various artist mini LPs geared for DJs with 7 tracks each. They contain a mixture of Afro, Disco, Jazz-influenced and Experimental House tracks topped off with a few spicy Hip Hop instrumentals. The release is a well-curated blend of styles from the scene’s most appreciated up-and-coming artists as well as a few undiscovered talents. Its diversity makes it a default in any DJs record bag - with club tracks for warm ups, peak moments or experimental after hours.

Unearthing lost gems from deep underground is RFX’s speciality. With regular releases on his own imprint Fauve Records based in Hong Kong, we saw it fit for RFX to grace us with 4 edits from the beyond for our first On Point Worldwide Edits series. The first track is a heavy boogie electro beat with a lovable crackling sound, a very rare tune found in the UK attics with a lot of luck. Following this is a groovy Italo influenced jam with a bouncy feeling, perfect for those weirdos to do their thing on the dance-floors. The third is a Kwaito edit with the simplest of flute melodies and a raw beat that gets you hooked in the first 30 seconds. Add a splash of acid to the track and you get a late-night anthem. Last but not least, a choppy break-beat style track with Indian percussions & dark heavy bass for all those sweaty clubs.

PREMIERE: RFX - Lift Your Spirit Up (RFX Edit)

Beyond their highly sought after 1978 album Festa Para Um Novo Rei - home to the mystical jazz-funk classic ‘Vidigal’ and released on Philips’ iconic Musica Popular Brasileira Contemporanea series (MPBC) - little is known about Marcos Resende & Index, even to aficionados of rare Brazilian music. Far Out Recordings is immensely proud to present their previously unreleased self-titled debut album from 1976, contributing a crucial missing work from the glory days of progressive Brazilian instrumental music.

A prodigious child, Marcos Resende learned to play the accordion at the age of two, and taught himself the piano at six. In spite of his immense potential to become a musician he travelled to Lisbon in the 60s to study medicine, though he continued to explore his musical passion on the side, forming a trio which ended up opening for Dexter Gordon at the Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971. From here he formed the electronic oriented prog-jazz group Status, who opened shows for the likes of Elton John, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but in spite of their relative live success they have no known recordings.

Now established as a highly regarded keyboardist, composer, and innovative electronic musician, Resende returned home to Brazil following Portugal’s Revolução dos Cravos in 1974.  Inspired and invigorated by US jazz and British progressive rock he’d experienced while residing in Europe, Resende went all out acquiring a keyboard arsenal to be reckoned with, which included the Prophet 5, Yamaha CP-708 and Mini Moog. Determined to integrate his newfound inspirations with Brazilian rhythms and jazz traditions, he formed a new quartet with Rubão Sabino (bass), Claudio Caribé (drums) and the late great Oberdan Magalhães, of Banda Black Rio and Cry Babies fame. Marcos Resende & Index recorded their self-titled debut at Sonoviso Studios with the legendary sound engineer Toninho Barbosa, known as the ‘Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder’ whose impressive resumé includes the era defining classics Light As A Feather by Azymuth, Previsão Do Tempo by Marcos Valle, and Quem É Quem by João Donato. Marcos Resende & Index fits perfectly amongst these masterpieces, sharing both the timeless ethereal qualities as well as the progressive and futuristic ideals of Light As A Feather in particular.

Though he wasn’t short of offers to release the album, Resende felt record companies were de-valuing the time and effort he spent absorbing his influences while establishing a career in Europe, and perfecting his sound with his Brazilian bandmates, as well as the magnitude of the recording they achieved. As time passed, Resende become one of the most revered session keyboardists in Brazil, and played on records by Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque, Edu Lobo, Carlos Dafé and Gal Costa, among many others; as a result his career as a bandleader took a backseat, and this remarkable recording has stayed below the surface til now.

Thankfully Marcos kept the tapes from the Sonoviso sessions safe and presented them to Far Out’s Joe Davis at his home in Lisbon in 2018. Now the time is finally right for the album to see the light of day. Marcos Resende & Index will be available on vinyl, CD and digital formats from 29th January 2021.

Moscow-based producer Alex Leyfa has been active for the best part of 10 years now, dropping albums on Local Talk and In-Beat-Ween as well as scores of EPs for City Fly, 4Lux, Soundofspeed, G.A.M.M. and many more. Now he's up on Lumberjacks with some choice cuts that show off his instinct for fluttering breakbeats as much as headsy house music, not least on the soaring, smooth delights of 'Good Thing!'. 'Up We Go!' rides another high grade break and chops up plenty of soul samples in the mix too, while 'HEAVY' explores a wilder broken beat terrain where you can almost visualise Leyfa getting creative on the MPC pads. 'My Reflection' completes the set with a seriously grooving house cut replete with loom bird samples and dreamy guitar licks.

Lumberjacks in Hell has been founded in 2010. Intimate Friends followed in 2013. For some people the difference or the need for distinction between these two is quite evident but to give you an idea. Lumberjacks is always 100% for the dance floor, inspired by the music from Chicago and Detroit which is not only reflected in the Artists we release. Intimate Friends is a headier affair. Soul, Hip Hop and House are all fair game. If you check the releases next to each other both labels have a distinct sound. And maybe a certain BPM range. This isn't saying that some of the music couldn't have appeared on either label but somehow it all makes sense to me.
