Chicago legend, deepest of diggers, editor, producer, collector, Mark Grusane!

Mark Grusane is a Chicago treasure whose relationship with the dancefloor goes back to the 80s. With a special instinct for what makes people move, his unique approach to DJing brings together obscure genres of dance music with passion, style and panache.
Music has always been an integral part of Mark Grusane’s life, from his Chicago childhood in the early ‘80s to his globe-trotting career as a DJ and producer. His passionate, intuitive style coupled with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things house and disco has made him a favorite among dancers and DJs alike.

Mark’s selections always come from the heart, mixing technical prowess with perfectly timed groovy selections that are not just obscure but also filled with emotion. His unique style and command over the dancefloor comes from a lifetime of digging, listening and making music. Growing up surrounded by numerous individuals involved in Chicago DJ, music and club culture played a crucial role in his upbringing, shaping him into the person he is today. Mark started collecting music with his older brother as a pre-teen, his early taste also shaped by the sound of local radio WBMX. In high school he was already DJing on college radio WKKC and spending his lunch breaks making music with friends.
 
With his record collection exponentially growing and his thirst for music nowhere near quenched, he began to sell some to his peer and older DJs. This passion led to creation of Mr. Peabody Records with fellow music fanatic Mike Cole in 2004, which soon became a go-to source for local and international diggers alike.

Sadly the brick-and-mortar store closed its doors in 2012, but Mark continued to bring his incessant curiosity and love for music into the world through compilations and edits series. He now runs the Disctechno Music, which aims to showcase his diverse passion for dance music from friends and affiliates, as well as his own original productions.

Mark has played many revered clubs and festivals, such as Dekmantel, Panoramabar, Bassiani, Djoon and Nowadays. 

Be it through his mixes, DJ sets, edits or productions, Mark always knows how to create a cohesive, highly emotional narrative you’re bound to want to revisit over and over again. Tour dates for 2021 are pending, Stay Tuned.

This is a radio documentary I hosted in 2000 when we were promoting The Loft compilations David and I produced for Nuphonic. It features interviews with David, Alex Rosner and Francois K and of course, some great Loft classics. The doc was broadcast on XFM and was produced by my friend Chris Menist. I am somewhat embarrassed by my old presenting style (LOL!) but hey it was twenty years ago and I hope I have progressed since then ;). In any case, it's wonderful to hear David's voice and his own words and I hope you will enjoy this as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Loft. Love Saves the Day! Lumberjacks in Hell has been founded in 2010. Intimate Friends followed in 2013. For some people the difference or the need for distinction between these two is quite evident but to give you an idea. Lumberjacks is always 100% for the dance floor, inspired by the music from Chicago and Detroit which is not only reflected in the Artists we release. Intimate Friends is a headier affair. Soul, Hip Hop and House are all fair game. If you check the releases next to each other both labels have a distinct sound. And maybe a certain BPM range. This isn't saying that some of the music couldn't have appeared on either label but somehow it all makes sense to me.
