Hardly a stranger to the scene, Ash Moses first made a name for himself in DJ booths across his hometown of Sydney. It wasn't long before the bonafide musician crossed the DJ booth threshold into the realm of production under the Tunnel Signs moniker and, eventually, as one-half of the Death Strobe label, where he released his debut 'Sun' EP. Remixed by the likes of Daniel Avery and championed by DFA's James Murphy, 'Sun' made ripples in' the electronic pond far beyond his homeland. Following its success, Ash Moses has returned with a solid EP via Have A Killer Time.  

The product of two years in the studio, 'Dream City' brings to life an array of Ash's influences across 5 tracks. Layered, complex, and slightly tortured, the record is a seamless amalgamation of inspiration.  

"I really got into a lot of minimal wave/EBM stuff whilst making the record and found a lot of it meshes nicely with my love for science fiction, especially books and films with an underlying sense of foreboding and a climate where technology has run amok," says Ash of 'Dream City.'

A child of the '80s, Ash grew up idolizing 'Ghostbusters' and, in turn, the city of New York. 

"I was always really fascinated by the city of New York and how it was an important character in those films," says Ash. "I loved the underground subway scenes in the second film and this began a lifelong interest with the unseen and hidden sides of cities."

Subsequently, he credits a trip to the city and experiencing its gritty beauty for influencing the record. 

"Going to New York for the first time and seeing the steam rise from the grates fascinated the hell out of me."

“The dream city is unnervingly familiar yet totally alien. In terms of the record, it’s a reference to the skewered music, vibes and imagery that fueled the release."

Items & Things fans worldwide had a chance to prove themselves as big league level producers for the first time earlier this year.

Beatport’s “Marc Houle – Very Bad Remix Contest” drew over 132 entries from all corners of the world as contestants powered up their amplifiers and lit up their soundboards in hopes of snagging the grand prize: one Novation Dicer, the full Items &amp; Things back catalog, and the honor of having their remix digitally released on Items &amp; Things. In the end, 26-year old Retro Jay a.k.a. Josiah Kirton from Barbados claimed the fame with an upbeat Stripped Out remix.

The runner-up community pick, chosen by Beatport voters, went to 23-year old Exiva from Krivoy Rog, Ukraine who was awarded $50 worth of Beatport credits in addition to having his remix digitally released alongside both Marc Houle’s and Retro Jay’s remixes on IT015.

Once the deadline for submissions ended, Marc Houle went through all 132 remixes, ultimately selecting his favorite 10. Amongst the 10 was Retro Jay who was ultimately chosen with help from Magda and Troy Pierce.

The digital-only release will be available exclusively on Beatport on May 18 under the title: Very Bad Remixes. The original track can be found on the Undercover album which was released on Feb 24.

Marc Houle grew up in Windsor, Canada with Detroit as his mid-90’s backyard party playground – as a kid he had a love for obscure new wave & analog synths, so it was just a matter of time before he started making music of his own. Ask any of his friends, and they’ll tell you the same: the guy is a prolific music-making-machinist, dedicated to quality, but quantity as well – with nearly 1,000 tracks to his credit (most of which are tucked away on his hard drive as super secret weapons).

Now taking the reigns alongside his A&R partners Magda & Troy Pierce, Marc Houle has resurrected their label Items & Things, breaking it free from its former Minus sub-label status. Spanning electronic genres in a variety of forms… from disco tech to experimental to techno, to bring their eclectic tastes together as an outlet for music they discover on their travels & a home for their own releases.

Marc Houle’s current sound can be described in cityscapes – somewhere between Chicago & Detroit, with a new-wave underbelly. His live performances are always diverse & genre-bending reigns supreme. No two sets are ever the same, except perhaps, their ability to impress the crowd.

He’s travelled a long way from his 1997 residency at Richie Hawtin’s club “13 Below” in Detroit, to being asked to join the legendary Minus label, now making Berlin his home & continuing to show his diverse musical roots on his productions. In February 2012 Marc Houle released his heavy-hitting, second album and single “Undercover” on Items & Things, with more releases in the making.

Nightlife’s International treasure, Heidi is back with the second release on her label project, this time presenting ‘Jackathon Jams feat. Alexis Raphael & Marc Houle’. With bubbling UK talent, Alexis Raphael at the helm and a remix by Items and Things label boss Marc Houle, this is a nifty little collection of club weapons with that all-important Jackathon swagger.

Heidi started her Jackathon Jams imprint earlier this year, bringing Miss Kittin, Maya Jane Coles and tINI together in one tidy package and is next championing Alexis Raphael, one of London’s favourite DJ/Promoters. With a handful of sensational tracks under his belt (on Hot Creations and Lower East) and running one of London’s most popular club nights Crèche, it’s no wonder Alexis has caught the attention of Heidi.

Delivering two special productions for the imprint’s sophomore release, both tracks carry a nod to retro house with some offbeat modern flavour. A-side ‘Brickwall’ kicks off with sauntering percussion and a rubbery bassline soon to be invaded by wonky synths and FX along with a central vocal line. Second original ‘You Can Do It’ follows in a similar vein with another distinctive spoken male vocal entering the pulse of the rough-edged, jacking groove.

A superb Marc Houle remix rounds off the package as the Berlin pioneer takes ‘Brickwall’ and bestows his own stripped back and expansive approach, warping the vocal to form a barely recognisable framework then unleashing darkly seductive chimes, building the drama with big beats and abstract melodies.

Rebekah's Elements label welcomes Storb who delivers two vigorous cuts, while the label boss herself and Scalameriya provide remixes.
Something of a mystery, Storb may be elusive but his driving music speaks volumes. The industrial techno producer has released on labels like Diffuse Reality and Emetic, but now he is invited to join Birmingham's pivotal techno tastemaker Rebekah’s imprint accompanied by a remix from the esteemed artist herself, not to mention Serbian techno purveyor and live performer Scalameriya who’s recently released on THEM and Genesa Records.
Taking a haunted and brutal route from the off, 'The Donut Theory' is built on contorted synths and sewed pads that together generate a twisting and turning aural experience, followed by ‘Gasp’ which thunders forward using hyperdrive drums, frazzled effects, overdriven machine sounds and caustic textures.
On the flip, Scalameriya remixes 'The Donut Theory' incorporating hammering broken beats, urgent alarm samples, industrial components and fizzing stabs. Tying it all together, Elements boss Rebekah reinterprets ‘Gasp’ by stripping things back to focus on colossal kicks and firing sirens that permeate a relentless groove to generate a pure warehouse inclined energy.

Following two tracks on the label compilation “Variables,” Iranian-born, Berlin-raised DJ and producer Nyma returns to Items & Things with Kybernetik, his debut solo release for the label, released here as a digital exclusive. A mainstay on Berlinʼs club scene and perennial figure in the Items & Things camp, Nyma hones his craft with Kybernetik, its slow burning disco groove and relentless funk guaranteed to function as adequately in a warm up set as at peak time; its contagious rhythms as appropriate for that early morning injection of energy or for the creation of that late night disco explosion.
 
Fusing organic instrumentation with machine, the driving rhythms, slap-bass hits, and infectious guitar riffs of the original are drawn out on the EPʼs flip side, with the dub version bringing the bass even further into the forefront of the mix: breathing additional groove into the track whilst nevertheless maintaining the dynamic intensity of the original. 

Remix duties come from label boss Marc Houle, who in true Items & Things fashion strips Nymaʼs original down to its bare bones, sprinkles it with his unique blend of experimental techno, and turns the bass up to eleven. What results is a mix as eerie as it is groove driven: its building lead lines, stuttering 909 hats, and synth eccentricities a flawless expansion on the funk of the original.
