"What’s up with Mathias Schaffhäuser?"

During recent weeks, several media outlets and nearly his entire fanbase scrutinized how close Mr. Schaffhäuser was to the Abyss, wondering whether one should worry about him or if it was time to light the bonfire to celebrate his illumination. There’s a big mystery about his long-awaited Abyss single release: is it a meaningful hymn of our times, or just a sentimental, melancholic mirror of Mathias’ mental state?

Well, luckily things are different from how they may seem at first sight, and nobody should feel troubled for the Cologne-based artist. The lyrics of the song emerged spontaneously during one of his DJ sets, when he improvised and sang along - one of Schaffhäuser’s special skills - inspired by the 1989 sci-fi film of the same name, a fascinating deep water adventure. The stand-out message is a positive one woven into a dark fabric. “Build me a bridge over the Abyss”: get your things done, be active, don’t lose your hope - life goes on!

'Abyss' was originally released on Schaffhäuser’s acclaimed 'Diderot' album on Biotop in 2016. During a preliminary listen, it was immediately the most touching track for label boss Patrick Zigon, and formed the basis of the idea to work on the album. Timo Maas and Ruede Hagelstein were additionally fascinated by this dark yet luminous masterpiece, so the idea of a strong remix single was born and quickly realized. Timo delivers a rough version with banging drums and trippy vocal effects, while Ruede Hagelstein adds beautiful harmonic synths to his reductionist hypnotic voyage. Patrick Zigon captures the ‘80s vibe and underlines it with classy electro breaks, while Mathias speeds up the original with his 'Accelerated Mix'.

Marc Houle follows 2007’s Techno Vocals EP with a string of releases that experiment with the true potential of the digital download age, 3 tracks released per week for one month.

The project aptly titled Sixty-Four represents an exciting phase in Marc Houle’s production cycle with most of the year having been spent testing ideas for his album. As a result, these twelve tracks were only ever meant to represent ‘work in progress’, functioning primarily as DJ tools for Magda, Troy Pierce and Richie Hawtin over the summer with Marc also performing them live on the road and during the Contakt shows. However, exactly because of their 'in-between' nature, their inherent quirkiness and route one approach the crowds have really taken to them and other DJs have been desperate to get their hands on them. To satisfy demand, Minus has put together this very special series of digital releases for August, before a double pack 12" hits the shops in September featuring seven carefully selected tracks.

They contain such a wealth of unique and twisted sounds that it’s a challenge finding adjectives to describe them. Houle attacks each idea with verve and tenacity, constantly varying the unconventional line up of machines at his disposal, in fact there’s a vast collection of equipment on display here - early analogue synths, sequencers and drum machines, 80s digital synths, modern buchla synths, samplers, vocals, acoustic drums, electronic trigger pads, bass guitar - even a vst! The result is a plethora of sound encapsulating different styles and multi – coloured dimensions as each track revolves around a musical motif that’s subsequently stretched, contorted and wrenched in every direction possible. It all works perfectly as Houle never loses sight of the basic orthodoxies needed to make a techno track kick.

Week 1 sees the digital release of Sands, Deathray At You and Jouster, and the depth and quality of sound generated from his arsenal of machines is immediately apparent. Just check out the heavily treated raw bleeps and blips that usher in the huge, filtered bass loop on Sands. Every element is given space to breathe as the slow techno groove constructs around a dark acid bassline before the 808 hats introduce more beautifully crafted sounds, creating a lush analogue landscape. The beginning of Deathray At You reflects the title perfectly. A four-note descending bassline then takes the floor and Houle starts running amok with a selection of modulated effects that literally pull the sound inside out while the unobtrusive beats keep everything ticking over. Jouster combines more classic beats with laser cheeky unquantized toms and a low slung, warbling bassline in a rough and ready style including a classic, sampled vocal section.

There’s a strong reference to 80s computer and video game culture during week 2 with Buchla9 as it leaps and cavorts across the sonic spectrum - Just wait for the bass to kick in. Steeplechase is another high-end mixing tool continuing the theme of machines in meltdown with a fuzzy bassline slowly warping up and down while the loose groove speaks with a lazy tongue. Door Nobula then rounds off the instalment with a more aggressive techno workout. The beat hammers the point home with lethal precision as a twisted, freaking acid line dominates the majority of the track.

Week 3 returns to a slightly more sedate state of affairs with Flapping Around displaying some distinct early techno tendencies although its not long before Houle launches the unassuming riff and we’re off again. Selection 12 contains authentic bass guitar work, looped and filtered against a backdrop of delayed drum rolls and thick, reverberating swathes of guitar. The post punk overtones bring a dark, brooding quality to the project making it a welcome but not entirely out of place departure. Ketchup and Beans then kicks in with a tasty electro-funk groove. It’s an infectious dancefloor warmer complete with bouncing, elastic bassline and hypnotic hook taking control and ordering you to dance.

As we enter the home straight of this mammoth release, the fantastically titled Meatier Shower rains down as the title implies, complete with raw sampled hook line and creative interplay between the bass and a Magda vocal. It’s a bomb that detonates with insane harpsichord riffing at the end and a deeply meaningful last note. Investments instigates more mischief with shifting time signatures and delay effects that disorientate the dancefloor before What Are You Doin brings the curtain down. Drifting amid a haze of classic beats and a self referencing cut up vocal, it revolves around a programmed sequence, chattering in a way that reaffirms Marc Houle’s complete and almost unnerving control over his machines.

Marc Houle has been wowing audiences for over a decade with a live performance that is constantly evolving night after night, in city after city, at clubs and festivals worldwide. The skill and effort that goes into creating these truly 'live' sets is the result of an entire lifetime dedicated to electronic music and a deep love of the machines that make it.
Raised adjacent to Detroit in Windsor, Ontario, in the same fertile music community that spawned Richie Hawtin, Houle’s obsession with electronic sounds goes back to the noise of ’80s video games and vintage synthesizers. And while too many electronic artists use their machines as merely tools of convenience, Houle regards his with a dedication found in few producers.
The results have been extraordinary. A decade-long career of seminal records on Hawtin’s Minus label, as well as his own Items & Things imprint, that not only helped define the beloved minimal sound of the mid-‘00s (“On It”), but had a laugh at its expense (“Techno Vocals”), before transcending the limits of the sub-genre completely by incorporating industrial, disco and new wave influences
(“Undercover”).
A committed live performer, he arrives at each gig equipped six superb albums worth of material, whilst the inception of his new project alongside Octopus Recordings founder Sian sees this number multiply extensively, as the duo weave together hypnotic, warping soundscapes as they deliver Marsian (Live), with their 2018 debut tour which began in Detroit and navigated throughout the Americas setting the tone and vision from the off.
And then there is the steady stream of new music - whether it's material on the likes of Innervisions, where Houle has contributed to the label’s renowned 'Secret Weapons' series as well as delivering his stand out 'Silver Siding' EP, or remixes of classic cuts (like those found on the 10-year anniversary remix of his Restore album by Joris Voorn, Popof, Julian Jeweil and Danny Daze), plus a string of Items & Things remix packages that have welcomed artists such as Chloe and Tobi Neumann to the imprint to date. Not strictly bound to electronic music in the traditional sense, Houle’s work has also led to explorations into film, producing a score of Kurutta Ippeiji’s 1926 original silent film 'A Page of Madness' to critical acclaim.
Add the equation a deeply rooted connection and affinity with the city of Detroit, widely regarding as the birthplace of Techno, and equally as close ties to Houle’s current adopted home of Berlin, exemplified through his creation and development of 2018’s 'Sound of Berlin' documentary soundtrack, and it’s no wonder Houle’s records have found their way into the crates of DJs far-flung from his typical list of peers.
