i like the smooth transients of the chandler. how does this work out at percussive stuff?

This song was made to show how I have improved in timbral and texture use with electronic composition. I tried to use a large spectrum of frequency with a thick harmonic low end with reverb to create a spacey ambient feel. I also threw in a melody using a sample from "We Found Love" by Rihanna which is the "the light" sample. I mapped it to a keyboard and played it as if it were a lead... I also wanted to express dynamics by use of low pass filters. The last thing I wanted to do was make an unpredictable percussive element that is in time (the loud reverberated rimshot).

The Light (Final Composition)

My First Club Mix. Meant to mimic the German House DJs, while incorporating some things I learned in class this year. The purpose of this project was to show something you don't think you could do before taking this class. I think the main thing this class taught me is that compositions should be relatively unpredictable. I incorporated that into this piece in a few ways, mainly sharp transitions and also a key change that really doesn't make any sense in the middle of it. Don' worry, though, we go back to the original key for the ending theme.


I picture this composition being played in a club with approximately 9 subs, all the size of my house.

Throughout this class, I've noticed one thing on which I really improved: melodies. Before the Melody composition, I was absolutely terrible at melodies. Now, I know how to make a melody flow within any piece, even if it's awkwardly out of key. 

So, that's what I wanted to demonstrated with this last composition. The project is done all in Logic Pro X with the exception of the third section. For that section, everything that is not the piano melody was created using Maschine and Komplete, then bounced from Pro Tools and finally imported to the Logic file.

I guess I'm also showing my increased understanding of layering and subtleties; the reason for choosing to compose such a techno-electronic styled piece, at least when compared to my other compositions.

I definitely like this piece. Mainly because when I sat to start it, I had no idea what I wanted to do, then, within an hour, I was half way done and knew exactly where I was going. The working title of the song was "Scary Pop" and I think that's fairly self-explanatory. Almost cliche progression and sounds coupled with some weird, non-chordal tones and modulations on the key.

Stranger Think

Here's the second bootleg from our 90s mix. Everything you hear in this one is from 1996. This may or may not be the final mashup we ever do, so lets all turn a blind eye just this one last time. To all you brow-raisers, keep that bushy little caterpillar above your right eyeball nice and low. In the spirit of the 90s (and even in the spirit of some classic Soulwax), here's another bootleg to add some nostalgia to your next hip hop soiree.

We weren't very old in '96, but we were certainly listening to to enough music to know what we enjoyed. Even to this day, Jamiroquai remains and inspiration to our productions. Look no further than Foreign Language to catch a few glimpses of Cosmic Girl. The 90s mix was inevitably going to be hip hop, but we wanted to somehow sneak in a few other songs that were instrumental to shaping the decade and our tastes. It worked out as one of the most fortunate coincidences that Hypnotize and Virtual Insanity were in key together. And we know how naff it can be to throw a Biggy acapella over anything, but in tribute to that particular year (and even decade), we had to pay respect to one of the best in the game.

As a fun side note, the drums are taken from The Fugees - Killing Me Softly (also from 1996). This bootleg is so jam-packed with 1996'ness, it's one Slap-band away from turning into a Troll Doll.

Jamiroquai/Notorious BIG - Notorious Insanity (1996)

A good friend & inspiration of mine came up with the idea for a Mashup titled "Semblance of Sound" a while back. I instantaneously heard the track & fell in love. I wanted to pay some respect to it's originator by making my own version of this one-way trip to nostalgia. Here's a cheers to Mr. DJ Bahler, thank you sir!
