In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Edition #4 in this year by year series pays tribute to the Hip Hop of 1990, a year when the genre really spread its wings with a diverse range of new sounds breaking in all corners of the US and overseas. 1990 is probably most celebrated as signalling the birth of the ‘afro-centric’ era, with debut albums from X-Clan, Professor X, Poor Righteous Teachers, A Tribe Called Quest and many others hitting stores. But 1990 was also an important year for the artists elsewhere on the Hip Hop spectrum: Compton’s Most Wanted, Capital Punishment Organisation and Above The Law all released debut albums proving LA had much to offer outside the mainstream popularity of NWA. Aside from new developments, established artists including LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy and EPMD all dropped classic long players.

After spending hours in my own crates due to this forthcoming sale, I got inspired, hopped on the decks and rocked a live 90 minute mix of soul, funk, library, jazz, disco, hip-hop, etc. There's joints and genres from all around the world. I went hard (pause) on the doubles at some points, and there's some instrumental/acapella blends up there too… 

This was an spur of the moment practice session that was never to be given to the public, just to listen to later for ideas… no playlists, no preparation… A few mates enjoyed it whom I sent it to and prompted me to get it out there… Please excuse all the sloppy mixes, cuts, etc. I wanted to keep it raw like the mixes of the 90's… feedback is appreciated.

Pete Rock Tribute Mix: James Brown

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. This fifth bonus mix focuses on another sub-genre popularised in the 90s, the fusion of Hip Hop and Dancehall vocals. The mix features artists who hung their hat on that particular fusion (Mad Lion, Bobby Konders), Hip Hop styled remixes of Dancehall cuts (see DJ Muggs’ remix of Danny Red), Dancehall artists who vocalled Hip Hop beats (Mega Banton, Lady Apache) plus some pairings of Dancehall Acapellas with Hip Hop production from the era exclusive to this mix. The cover art references Nervous Records' 'Weeded' sub-label responsible for a number of key releases in this particular lane.

Marc Hype began his DJ career, inspired by the late great Jam Master Jay, in 1988 and went through the several decades of hip hop with countless releases, tours and competitions like the ITF championships, which he won twice in 98 & 99. During this time he collaborated and recorded with artists like the Juice Crew legend Masta Ace, Souls Of Mischief, DJ Z-Trip, Killa Kela & Mr. Lif. Over the years his record collection and his musical mind  expanded and led him to all kinds of funky music. His selection on the decks as on production is freestyle, always with a unique groove, no matter the genre.

Jim Dunloop began to train as a classical piano player at the age of four. At his minor age he was analyzing the compositions of Gershwin and Bruback, leading to a keen interest in jazz music. He quickly developed his knowledge of the creative works of many great jazz/funk pianists such as Herbie Hancock , Bob James , Chick Corea and Adam Makiewicz.

In the year 2004 they both met in Berlin for the first time and quickly began to collaborate on shows and production. Their first vinyl releases on the infamous Milk Crate label, "The Antique Anthem", "Bombay Raw" & "Finale 74", were very successful in the worldwide dj-circuit, followed by a cover version of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" in 2006, which was dubbed by UK's Jazzman Gerald as "the" version to have. On the remix tip they build a strong reputation with works for artists like All Good Funk Alliance, Deela or Kid Gusto.Their past tour schedule proved their ability to rock internationaly with stops allover europe as in NYC, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, United Arabian Emirates, Israel & Australia.

The live performance of Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop is best defined as a mix of DJing, Turntablism and the highest of piano art. Together they gain 50 years of musical experience!

The Album

"Stamp Out Reality" is the musical manifest of Marc Hype & Jim Dunloop. A diverse mix of different styles which reflects their unique live concept. On the one hand you have classic hip hop joints like "Predominant" ft. the magnificent Mr. Lif or "Oh Really" ft. Queen's own Mr. Complex, on the other you might listening to Miami's Old School Funk legend Blowfly on "The Pussy Song", cuban diva Malena Perez from NYC on the latin influenced "Rare Occasion, heavy break stompers like "Wah Wah Wah"" or a funk cover version of the 80s electro classic "Al Naafiysh (The Soul)". The concept of the album is to display the diversity of the two maestros, coming from different backrounds, met inside the hip hop culture and travelleling through the paths of 21st century funk.
