As far as I'm concerned, this is the best volume ever produced on the fateful Battle Of Kursk, probably real turning point of WWII and one of the most misunderstood and overlooked battles in recent history. It is - more or less - a straightforward translation of the general study on the battle that the Soviet General Staff (under a collective authorship) wrote in 1944. Guess what? It is a technical, sometimes brutally candid account of the battle as seen from different point of view: the Gernman plans and offensive, the Soviet defense, the aerial battle, the artillery, and  - of course - the tank manouvers. Even if the style is - naturally, given the origins of this volume - often dry and matter of fact, it is nonetheless a mandatory read for every Eastern Front enthusiast. It is all here - countless first hand infos on the battle, hour-by-hour accounts of the action, loads of maps (albeit not always well readable), details on tactis and strategy... the only thing missing is the dreaded "human angle", but given that personal accounts are - often - just an excuse for melodrama and manipulation of the reader, if you're serious on history I'll not miss it a bit. It astonishing how balanced and objective this study is (possibly because it was for "internal circulation", and not for the general public) and it make some sort of ironic comparison with the lack of anything like that on the German side - the OKW study on the battle looks like it was written by von Manstein's lawyer! All in all - another invaluable service by col. Glantz to the dwindling community of Eastern Front historians...

The Body of the Cross  is a study of holy victims in Western Christian history and how the uses of their bodies in Christian thought led to the idea of the cross as a substitutionary sacrifice. Since its first centuries, Christianity has traded on the suffering of victims—martyrs, mystics, and heretics—as substitutes for the Christian social body. These victims secured holiness, either by their own sacred power or by their reprobation and rejection. Just as their bodies were mediated in eucharistic, social, and Christological ways, so too did the flesh of Jesus Christ become one of those holy substitutes. But it was only late in Western history that he took on the function of the exemplary victim.
In tracing the story of this embodied development,  The Body of the Cross  gives special attention to popular spirituality, religious dissent, and the writing of women throughout Christian history. It examines the symbol of the cross as it functions in key moments throughout this history, including the parting of the ways of Judaism and Christianity, the gnostic debates, martyr traditions, and medieval affective devotion and heresy. Finally, in a Reformation era haunted by divine wrath, these themes concentrated in the unique concept that Jesus Christ died on the cross to absorb divine punishment for sin: a holy body and a rejected body in one. Brian Bond (a protege of Sir Michael Howard and retired professor of military history in the War Studies Department of King's College, London) has written an essential contribution to the historiography of the First World War. The war has produced entire libraries of literature, plays, films and memoirs and Bond argues that these have come to dominate the study of the subject rather more than any serious investigation of the conduct of the fighting and the thinking that went behind the organisation of the opposing armies. It is only relatively recently that any serious study has been made of the fighting methods that were introduced (hyperbolic odes to the exploits of German stormtroopers notwithstanding), the levels of training and equipment and the serious thought processes that lay behind them.
Bond addresses several areas including;
- Whether the common perception that the Great War was an unnecessary and foolish war is correct.
- The impact of personal memoirs and especially the impact of the war poets on the historiography of the war.
- The extent to which the war became a totem of the left in the 1960s and the extent to which this has coloured the study of the subject.
Bond also addresses the ludicrously distorted image of the war that is posessed by the average "man on the street", a view which often bears next to no relation to reality. He deconstructs a number of areas which often combine to constitute the average person's knowledge of the war - Blackadder, Oh! What a Lovely War, the changing war in which history is studied in schools, opinion articles by ill informed tabloid newspapers and finds most of them dangerously distorting (and worryingly persistent) if we seek to realise any sort of balanced understanding of the conflict. He points to the fact that the war has become emotionalised like almost no other and tries to come to an explanation of why this is. He takes on much of the received wisdom and the results will no doubt infuriate many people who are incapable of moving outside the ridiculously emotionalised box in which the war is normally viewed. Above all, he tries to move the debate out of the field of social history and sociology where many of the best known works on the war have languished and into the field of serious military history and war studies, where it belongs. Sadly, it may well be that existing views are so heavily entrenched that the game isn't worth the candle.
This is a very important book and one which should be read by everybody with an interest in the First World War.

Many programs in military history will start students off with 
A Guide to the Study and Use of Military History
      or a survey work such as 
Men in Arms
     . The problem is the former is dated, missing roughly 30 years of advancements in an ever-changing field. The latter is merely a survey work, leaving out any analysis of the field of military history.
Luckily, Stephen Morillo has produced What is Military History?, a short (164 pages, 124 pages of content), to the point overview of the historiography of military history, including its origins, evolution, and controversies. This is the first book every aspiring military historian should read, as Morillo addresses practical questions such as who reads military history and why.
After the introduction, Morillo provides a short overview of how military history started in ancient times and evolved through the ages. Here, he covers the Greeks, Romans, China, Islam, Byzantium, others. He transforms his narrative into a period focus with the Enlightenment, and nineteenth- and early twentieth-century. Finally, he dedicates the rest of the overview to the last 50 years of military history. This chapter is especially useful, as budding historians need to understand that the style of history that drew them to the field may be as old as three centuries, and possibly outmoded.
The third chapter breaks down the conceptual frameworks of how people write about military history, focusing on causation and military minds, the latter of which is "the most common and often historiographically dominant approach...in modern developed countries" (49). In discussing tactical histories, Morillo breaks down the levels of military action, followed by the art of war and practice of war. He continues the discussion by reviewing cross-field subjects such as anthropology.
The fourth chapter is one of the most useful, even to those who are knee-deep in the field, as it focuses on current controversies such as military revolutions, counter-insurgencies, and the "western way of war." These and other concepts will inevitably appear in undergraduate curriculums and Morillo provides the guiding light to the topics without the emotion.
The final chapters focus on how to do military history, as well as the future of the field. Again, these chapters are superb for anyone considering the field. Finally, Morillo provides a slew of recommend reading.
This book is short, cheap, and worth every penny. Anyone considering military history as a field should buy it and read it.
