The Carnival of the Animals. The Swan - Camille Saint-Säens

This song is written to be a dramatic ballad in an (unwritten) play about a man who was involved in the 1970 anti-war bombing of a building at the University of Wisconsin.  The bombing was not meant to hurt anyone, but a researcher was in the building at the time, and he was killed. The bombers fled, and all were caught except one, Leo Burt. The story in the play imagines that Leo runs away somewhere and has a daughter. When the daughter is about to leave home, he decides to tell her the truth about his past, and to turn himself in. The idea for this comes from the true story of Katherine Ann Power, an anti-war revolutionary at the same time who was involved in a separate killing, and escaped, but eventually turned herself in 20 years later.

Leaving shattered wife, three infants at his home
Our righteous cause now dead and gone.

We fled that day like scattered leaves,
the others caught, but I stayed free.
A shadow life ’til memories would fade.
