XLR8R+ Submissions Round Up: February

With far too many chin strokers and music elitists around, we need people like Kristy Harper who choose to bring a sense of fun and sparkle to their musical pursuits instead. 

An advocate for female empowerment and body positivity, she translates these messages into both her productions and DJ sets. So far her releases have come via Let’s Play House and Monologues Records, followed by her acclaimed ‘My Body, My Future’ track, which samples Samirah Raheem’s viral interview at the LA ‘Slut Walk’. 

As a DJ, both behind the decks or on the Netil Radio airwaves where she holds a residency, she’s guided by a pure and unadulterated love of disco, Italo and classic house; sonics that filter into much of her musical output.

That goes for today’s mix too, which revs through a cocktail of synth-driven rhythms and bright acid-laced cuts, and follows Kristy’s fuego remix for our latest R$N Records release from Bawrut and Chico Blanco, which you should listen to stat!

Exclusive: Shine Grooves 'Naive Piano'

Hanagasumi's second releases comes from Andrey Kurokhtin under his Shine Grooves moniker, who delivers a six-tracker as beautiful, as blossoming as the label name suggests. The Yekaterinenburg artist and label-head simply wrote six pieces to ring in the meteorologically most promising time of the year in an elaborate and exciting manner. The EP's second track, Naive Piano, is a homage to the musical beauty of the instrument as Shine Grooves composed and arranged a track that is basically build around a single loop only with few effects added here and there. However, Naive Piano's naive simplicity is so strong and powerful that the beauty of the repetitive chords burn themselves into ones perception of ones reality so deeply that it evokes an easiness and happiness in the listener's mind that you can see the Hanagasumi in front of your inner eye.

Paris is burning! And Eliott Litrowski lit the match with his latest EP for OOSSHA. The producer from France once saw the light in the famous Rex club in Paris but has a profound love for Dutch underground dance music. He previously released singles on Moustache and Bordello a Parigi and now debuts on Utrecht based SoHaSo sublabel OOSSHA.

On his Long Story Short EP, Litrowski combines the boldness of Dutch west coast electro with the flair and finesse of French techno, while throwing in a hint of sweet flavoured Italo vibes. A good example is Blind Pilot, which is both frivolous and funky.

Or jump the needle to Cereal Funk, where the dry hi-hats and wild arpeggio’s give more than a nod to Dopplereffekt, while staying in fourth gear. No wonder the track gets a remix treatment by Ed DMX, who turns Cereal Funk into a proper electro monster without losing the core futuristic elements. Long story short, Litrowski’s music is both playful, quirky and tailor made for clubs.

The Mysidian label drops Ftzzgrld’s first EP of original tunes and they’re an absolute treat.

1993 features 3 deep numbers and tops it off with Roy Comanchero (Running Back, Alliance Upholstery) of Osaka, Japan’s remix of the title track.

All the right influences from ’93 are there while still sounding fresh! Being one of our favorite records of 2021 so far and it just being Ftzzgrld’s first EP on vinyl we might be getting ahead of ourselves when we say we’re already excited to hear more from both Ftzzgrld & Roy Comanchero!

Rick Silver & James Vernon’s fairly young but highly promising label has been releasing the highest standard of stripped back and stylish, dubbed-out sonics and have carved out a little section for themselves in the electronic music scene after honing a dynamic and appealing production style. Previous releases from the two label bosses and enigmatic artist Yallahs have captured the attention from various established names and they continue to show their flair for all things raw and exciting on their ‘Stories, Chapter One’ release.

James Vernon’s ‘Web Flight’ rounds off the EP with rough-edged modulations, looping rhythms and haunting pads that spiral in and out of focus with pure eccentricity.

Solune's Convolutions EP, second HMiT Records release, transports us to the world of mid-90s Manhattan and New Jersey clubs' where spirituality and dance were intimately interconnected, and comes within the scope of some American House labels of these same years, on which it was common to find two versions of the same song on the same record. This is the case here for "Feathered Blaze", which is presented in its original version and in its dub rereading, before giving way to an atmospheric track, "Gratitude".

"Feathered Blaze", epic piece of tribal house, takes us from the first seconds into an ecstatic trance whose intensity will continue to rise with the powerful and throbbing rhythmic loops that Solune takes the time to install and develop over time. The kick is intense, the bass heavy and the percussions are hypnotic. The body cannot help starting to dance but, beyond the dance, Solune speaks to our soul. Indeed, at this tribal rhythm are superimposed multiple harmonic layers, carried by very deep chords and ethereal synth lines. The whole is made bleary by a massive use of echoes and delays which infuses a deeply dub touch into the song. Listening to the song obviously brings Ron Trent to mind, as well as Joe Claussell, Kerri Chandler or some glorious releases of labels such as Ibadan and Nite Grooves. As for the Dub Essence version of the track, it tightens on rhythm, percussions and FX, which intermingle ad infinitum to describe complex convolutions in which it is exhilarating to get lost. The closing track, "Gratitude", is a magnificent ambient piece with its long synthetic layers that come and go, its delicate tribal percussions and its aerial and heady melody.

With the Convolutions EP, Solune plunges us into a tribal and mystical atmosphere: time is suspended there at this moment when communion is total on the dancefloor, where everyone, in a collective trance, moves in unison, in a sort of urban shamanic rite.

Premiering "Running Parallel" by Sistema Aero, , the collaborative effort between Charles Taciturn and xenonyms label boss GFXIII. Out on 18th February as a two-tracker single via xenonyms

The lead track sets off the genre bending mood of the release by incorporating distorted cumbia and jungle breaks inside a dreamy, buoyant atmosphere. In contrast 'Tierra Maldita' reveals itself as a sinister four-to-the-floor mutation full of hypnotic synths and eerie vocal sections.
