My heels made a sound they hadn’t made before, almost too real, like foley footsteps. There was a long queue outside the El Rey and they cheered as the band bus pulled up. 

I’m traveling in some vehicle
I'm sitting in some cafe

Central Avenue, Lindy’s Diner, Rio Grande - it all felt like in a film. When we went to pick up the hire car the place was closed because of a pipe bomb. Who’s doing pipe bombs these days? Someone is, apparently, in Albuquerque on a Sunday.

Now here's a man and a woman sitting on a rock
They're either going to thaw out or freeze

We went back to the hotel and a New Yorker in the lobby told us how she was here to bury her mother’s ashes by the road on Route 66. She’d flown out for the day and would be flying back: bosh. We found another car place and drove towards Arizona.

Well I looked at the granite markers
Those tribute to finality to eternity
And then I looked at myself here
Chicken scratching for my immortality

It was my first time in America and everything was drive-in: drive-in restaurants, I knew about those, but drive-in pharmacy, drive-in bank? Motels. The Navajo radio station was playing Barry White and the road was incredibly straight once we’d escaped the city.

Sam had been to this part of the world before - canyon land - and wanted to listen to Hejira by Joni Mitchell because he knew it would fit. It fat. The lake near Tsaile was frozen (you could probably drive a car on it). By it, the last of the snow and bright orange rock staying put.

Orbiting around the sun
But how can I have that point of view
When I'm always bound and tied to someone

I watched a Bessie Smith biopic on the plane out and met her again, days later, on the record player in a front room. The soundtrack for a road trip is always an nice and odd amalgam of the music you bring with you, the stuff you seek out and the stuff that finds you. Wind and voices too. So thanks to Albuquerque’s L.M. Dupli-cation label for the tunes, to Luci Tapahonso and Sam for the poetry, Ben for his driving and chastising, and Sarah for sharing great local bands and old-time favourites.
