Final 15 - A Ghostly 15 Playlist Curated by Michael Cina

"Anyone that knows me, knows that my main passion is music. I spend all day listening to music at work and my vinyl collection of 16k pieces greets me when I get home. I knew about Ghostly International before they contacted me in the early 2000’s and we would write off and on. They used to send me big packages of white labeled vinyl, it was decadent.

Late 2007 I got a call from Ghostly asking if I was up for designing a new single for Dabrye. It was a dream come true and I feel like I found a friend who really understood me. I have had the distinct privilege to design over 100 covers for Ghostly, and that is only the half of it.

When they asked me to do a compilation, I was all about it. I wanted to do three or more compilations because I wanted to segment it up into different sections (Ghostly, SMM and Spectral). It is impossible to reduce the entire label to 15 tracks. Ghostly is dynamic, they don’t fit one sound, genre or idea.

So I approached it as a mixtape of sorts. I tried to find a common thread that spoke to me and create a mood around that idea. Some of my favorite tracks are not on here. JDSY 'Horizon Line' makes my head spin. Choir of Young Believers 'Paralyse' takes me to another place. There are so many more.

Plafond enters its second decade with Cucina Povera and Haron fusing the folkloric and futurist. Maria Rossi and Haron Aumaj (real names) honour musical cinematism on ‘Riffittelyä’, which slowly unfolds during a twenty-two minute trail of exploration, angst and redemption. Meddling voices pinch through an aural mist, Kubrickesque strings impend and cathedral organs relevate. Most striking is the compatibility of Rossi’s tangibility and Aumaj’s computerisation, seamlessly forming a renewed dynamic, as granular as it is loose in texture.

During this unique first collaboration it can be quickly forgotten both artists have highly distinctive styles. We are reminded of these singularities on the other half of the record, featuring two solo works, both rich yet contrasting in their colour and emotion. On ‘Maandag, Spiegeldag’, Aumaj sketches in orange chromatics, a featherweight composition that feels far away from the greyscale fragility that Rossi portrays on ‘Ajatus’. Showcasing two minimalist artists catapulted by their stunning debut albums, this sixth Plafond keeps the listener in constant awe, pointing us to the endless potential of spontaneity.

Comes in Pantone printed outer sleeve with deep red and yellow topped with a silk screened black and a soft pink inner sleeve, wrapped in a dreamy blue Obi-strip printed with white and black, by the BAKK Fuzz Factory.

Dutch dance aficionados - Kraak & Smaak’s sixth studio album ‘Pleasure Centre’ was their first to be released on their very own Boogie Angst imprint, and as anyone has already heard it will testify – it’s a glorious affair of dancefloor aesthetics, downtempo, pop and electronica. 

Now we have the first installment of reworks with more to come in a full remix album later this year, first up LA based producer Turbotito takes on the album title track ‘Pleasure Centre’ and flips it’s downtempo eastern vibes into an acid house and disco infused beat. @samgoku is on fire. Right after his Every Step EP we now present Paradise Drum: a dazzling 3-track EP that further expands his vivid sound palette. The new EP is an absolute highlight from a producer on the rise. The tracks sound connected but have a very different focus - a quality where only the biggest producers live up to. It's out May 1.

Opening track Momentum is a deep, tribal work. The incredible drive of tom drums spans throughout its 8-minute arrangement. There’s beautiful detail in every aspect of the track and the harmonies of the lead-pad make it a contender for being one of the big tunes of this years summer. Orchids Rapture, the second track of the EP, sounds more robust. It's a darker club record with a repetitive, sharp lead synth. The closing/title track Paradise Drum completes the EP. Here, Sam Goku goes wild on percussions. The breakbeat driven arrangement is topped off with a beautiful B-part that showcases compelling synth work.

Sam Goku’s real name is Robin Wang. He is based in Munich and his upbringing was Chinese for the most part. His parents moved to Germany in the early 90’s. Growing up with two different cultures, and mentalities, it’s those two contrasting influences we can hear back in the music. “I often talk to people who, respectively, don’t understand the other side and talk badly about other customs and traditions. I’d love to bring to people the understanding, that behind the differences in behaviors and measures, there are often similar, if not the same, emotions and motivations. I believe we need to nurture our culture of understanding. Since I am not a political person, I try to transmit this modest message through my music.”

"we go all the way back to my get physical music years -while i was recording my dislocated genius cd - in 2004! i always said to myself back then --he will certainly be the one to watch in the future!--  out of all my recordings&featurings over the decade, he was the rare producer/artist which i've actually wanted to meet face-to-face (with the exception of booka shade, röyksopp, marc romboy and eddie thoneick). i guess i've accumulated this odd reputation for being -marlene dietrich low-keyed-. we dined on some usa-stylized, fred flinstone-proportioned  food. made plans, exchanged ideas...,
i actually remember loving his cover&logo art!  i picked up on these classy details right away. voodoo dilate was ghoulish fun! he knew exactly what to do and how to approach the lyrical psychedelia. most producers would not have dared to drift that far from their backyard! the song is an ode to jean michel basquiat, and the fact that the underground music industry (still) seems to think that i am this dark reclusive voodoo priest. i still await our next cocktail, mr. menace!
