Ego, stylized in all lowercased letters, is the second single to precede Marcus Skeen’s second homemade album, ‘Dragonfly’. Produced and recorded over the span of two days, ‘ego’ introduces a playful beat that serves as the foundation for a heavy bass and punchy vocal performance from Skeen.

The song discusses a friendship that ended negatively, in which the friend had been manipulative, condescending, etc. Thus, Skeen felt devalued and helpless for the months leading up to this friendship’s collapse. The song details, however, that at some point, Skeen revitalized a sense of self worth, and it grew “ a little bigger than I wanted”, implying that he now has an inflated ego.

This might explain the unapologetic and near brash nature of the song, as Skeen comes to terms with his worth, and the incidents he was subjected to during this friendship.
