The epitamy of the disco era was the supergroup, the Bee Gee's. Their unique blend of high register vocals laced with harmonies created one of the most identifiable sounds in popular music. Mixed with a high-hat laden beat, they set the standard for the disco craze in the 1970's.

Producing hit after hit, the Gibb Brothers created an empire unlike any before or after. The practically ruled the airwaves and were in demand all over the world.

"Stayin' Alive" received it's biggest boost from the movie "Saturday Night Fever", which propelled the song to number one on the charts.

The following information is from The Tampa Bay Times:

"[Stayin Alive] was written and performed by the Bee Gees.[It] was the second release of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. It hit No. 1 on Feb. 4, 1978, and stayed there for four weeks. The song was written and recorded in Paris for tax reasons.The original Stayin' Alive video was scrapped and redone so lead singer Barry Gibb could grow a beard for it. A study showed that humming the song helped in administering CPR. The song has 103 beats per minute, the perfect number to maintain CPR rhythm."

I did not intend to do a smooth jazz style improvisation/interpretation on this song. It just happened! I hope you enjoy my take on one the most groove-filled songs in the popular music repertoire.

NOTES:
I've always wanted to cover this song but thought it too predictable, like too many have already. Well, sometimes you just have to get over it and go for it. A good song is a good song, and if you are true to its spirt then you should take a chance. 

Carlos Santana is without a doubt the most respected, most musical, and most beloved of all rock stars. Calling him a rock star seems a bit inappropriate for one who did so much to add to it's lustre and longevity.

He transcends the genre of pure classic rock and has surely contributed to one of the most incredible fusions of musical styles in history. The mixing of Latin and Rock is so perfect that one would be hard pressed to deny it's impact on the world music explosion that we see today. 

The man, Carlos Santana will surely be remembered as one of most influential musicians of our time. A master of his craft and a true living legend.

"One" is a song by Irish rock band U2. It is the third track from their 1991 album Achtung Baby, and it was released as the record's third single in March 1992. During the album's recording sessions at Hansa Studios in Berlin, conflict arose between the band members over the direction of U2's sound and the quality of their material. Tensions almost prompted the band to break up until they achieved a breakthrough with the improvisation of "One"; the song was written after the band members were inspired by a chord progression that guitarist The Edge was playing in the studio. The lyrics, written by lead singer Bono, were informed by the band members' fractured relationships and the German reunification. Although the lyrics ostensibly describe "disunity", they have been interpreted in other ways.

"One" was released as a benefit single, with proceeds going towards AIDS research. The song topped the Irish Singles Charts and US Billboard Album Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks charts, and it peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. In promotion of the song, the band filmed several music videos, although they were not pleased until a third was created.

The song was acclaimed by critics upon its release, and it has since been featured in polls of the greatest songs of all time. U2 have performed "One" at every one of their tour concerts since the song's live debut in 1992, and it has appeared in many of the band's concert films. In a live setting, "One" is often used by the group to promote human rights or social justice causes.

My Notes:
I am a late-comer to this song. During a flight down to Florida
last year I ended up being seated by a fashion model from Israel
who worked out of South Beach. As we talked she mentioned 
the song "One" by U2 as her favorite. I, or course, knew of the 
song and as fond as I am of U2 I never connected with that song. 
Well. low and behold, life has changed and the challenges are
piling up. The song now has tremendous meaning and I am sure
it was fate that brought me to it. Fate and a friendly girl who 
loved the song.

"One" u2 - Instrumental Version

My favorite all-time guitarist. I have many believe me and I've been influenced by all of them. But when I analyze how I play and phrase I hear Santana. Why? I'm not sure. As I was developing as a player in my 20s I listened to him of course but not to an extreme. In fact, I listened to others far more. There is something about his style that is in my blood. I love Latin music and that has been with more forever. So I'd say maybe I've hit on something? I stayed fairly close to the original on the key sections of the song of course, however as always I do my thing on the solo sections. That's me and always will be. Thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy my interpretation of Europa!

"Gettin' Far Away From You Blues"

A little solo electric guitar reminder of the sun and water. 
I recorded this a few months ago but felt it fit this vibe pretty well.
Yes, i used a Korean-made Epiphone SG style guitar plugged straight into a small BEHRINGER 4-channel board mixed through Reaper (software). Oh, into my MacBook Pro of course.

"Sun and Water"

A combination of rock and electro house , this track was made as an experiment in genre-blending. One of my favorite pastimes is to "mess with" differing combinations of music. 
As music moves forward and genres become more compatible with each other our ears begin to accept such sounds as viable. That's the magic of music.
All guitar parts were improvised with the harmonies added later.

"The Beat Goes On Without You"

A Smooth Jazz/R&B track recorded with a Paul Gilbert OGM300 Ibanez Electric Guitar. Not a guitar you would think of in this style but it worked. 
Mostly improvised using a combination of dorian, aeolian, and hybrid-pentatonic scales. 
This is dedicated to those who know what late night loneliness is all about.

A little jam over some funk/disco/smooth jazz layers. Don't ask what I played over the track until I analyze it. It happens first, and then it gets dissected. Just like music should.

I went to the bank today. The banker was in a bad mood. Dealing with people has got him unnerved I'm sure. Well, by the time I was finished I had him smiling. I did my part to better humanity by 9:30 am on a Saturday morning. All is good:)
Used an Fender Deluxe American Statocaster with a great "Official" Floyd Rose trem bar. I love using that thing:)

"The Angry Banker"

A one-minute improvisation over this really cool track. The drums seemed a little shady about half way through but whatever. I used the following modes in this short example:
I used A minor pentatonic, the A blues scale, my favorite hodgepodge scale the A minor mixed pentatonic, and A natural minor at varying points in the solo. Where...I haven't gone over that yet:)

"Leavin' that Behind" (Kiesel Solo Contest)

This was improvised. I recorded two tracks, one chords/solo riffs and the other was straight soloing.  There's not much I can say in terms of planning as there was none. I threw down some chords over a GarageBand Bebop drum loop and just kept going. How many rules did I break? Well, I used a Fender Stratocaster for the "jazz box" and I used it for the bass part also. I didn't have a key in mind when I started but is seems to vacillate between A minor and B minor harmonies. I did not think any scales or arpeggios. I went in cold and just played. The angular, jagged, sometimes disturbing lines in my mind made sense to me. Sometimes man ya just gotta go for it. Why not?

Written by Bill Withers ("Just The Two Of Us", "Lean On Me"), Ain't No Sunshine is an example of less is more. Using only four chords and really only two alternating sections, the song is a masterpiece in the soul/pop repertoire. Incredibly inventing and moving, this song is imbedded with meaning and mass appeal. 

I originally intended to do this much closer to the original but instead choose to once again, allow my mind run free. I left out, on purpose, the "I Know, I Know" section. It didn't seem at the time relevant to what I was doing. I am on the fence about that now and could change my mind in the future!

I hope you find this interesting and enjoyable. As always, I never intend to insult the original works, but instead, choose to offer a way to honor the original work with a view towards creativity and expression of my musical take on the composition.

INTERESTING FACT:
For the song's third verse, Withers had intended to write more lyrics instead of repeating the phrase "I know" 26 times, but then followed the advice of the other musicians to leave it that way: "I was this factory worker puttering around," Withers said. "So when they said to leave it like that, I left it."[3] (Withers, then thirty-one years old, was working at a factory making toilet seats for 747s at the time.
