Listening to the Anthropocene: Sound and ecological crisis

This talk explores imaginations of the natural world at a time of accelerating global environmental crisis; in an era currently being defined as the Anthropocene, a geophysical term “which recognises that human intrusion on the planet’s surface and into the atmosphere has been so extreme as to qualify our time on earth as a specific geological epoch”. It does so through mediums and methods of sound being used by artists, bio-acousticians and scientists to make sense of, and communicate, earth system changes. Mapping out a range of eco-acoustic practices from field recordings to data and geo-sonifications, the talk investigates how such practices seek to delineate, highlight, and/ or overcome, distinctions between natural and social, urban and rural, exceptional and everyday.

Anja Kanngieser is Vice Chancellors Fellow at the Australian Centre for Cultural Environmental Research, with a background in geography and communication studies. Her work focuses on the intersections of political economy and ecology, sound and social movements. She is interested in the ways in which people strategise, antagonise and collaborate to create the living and working conditions they desire. Bringing into dialogue political economic theory with audio practices, she is engaged in the experimentation and invention of sound based methods in the social sciences.

Anja Kanngieser – Listening To The Anthropocene Sound And Ecological Crisis (Liquid Architecture)

‘Sounding the Mississippi’ documents the Mississippi River as an acoustic space, registering the exceedingly industrialized soundscape of “Cancer Alley” and its infrastructure. Reflecting on the distribution of toxicity in the delta, I collected recordings above and below the riverine water line, analysing atmospheric sounds and vessel noise, while scouting for river specimens.

Recorded with an hydrophone, this sonic sample of the Mississippi river registers a soundscape where industry has been naturalized. The high density of shipping boats, petrochemical plants, supply stations and dredging activities has redefined the acoustic horizon of one of the most polluted deltas in the world. 

This recording was collected during a one week paddling journey between Baton Rouge and New Orleans with the River Semester under an invitation by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, on the occasion of 'The Anthropocene Curriculum: Mississippi. An Anthropocene River’ 2019.

Katrin Hornek’s work engages with the paradoxes and convergences of living in the age of the Anthropocene - an epoch in which capitalist, colonialist and extractivist activities have had an impact so great that terrestrial ecosystems have been profoundly modified. From collections of body stones to the solidification process of CO2, to the use of Earth’s geological stratas as musical scores, Hornek’s works examine the relationship between human beings and their mineral environment. “Her artistic practice asserts an understanding of the entwinement of nature and culture, implicitly arguing for more complex formulations that reflect the ways in which our bodies, cultures, materials, and thoughts are all composed of other presences that make up our world” writes philosopher Heather Davis. As an artist-researcher, Katrin Hornek also takes part in “the Anthropocene Surge”, a project led by the University of Vienna and the University of Applied Arts Vienna that maps the material influence of human activity on the city’s underground. Her artworks are poetic reflections on natural resources that foster more desirable futures.
