Clouds

She likes to like me, and I’d like to let her
But these clouds stick around regardless of the weather
She wrote the rules, follows them to the letter
So every day I’m trying just to be a little better

I tried all in, textbook impulsion
Blame it on my youthful compulsion
Tectonic plates shifted hard again
Created a chasm for myself to fall in

And when she leans in, breathes in, and exhales
Smiles big, sighs deep, adheres to the rails
She’s after something deeper
I know I don’t deserve to keep her
 
I offer my hands, as if that could be enough
As if she might want this temporary love
I tried some kind of justice, offered up poetic
Unprepared for standing there, wholly unprophetic
