Sunlight for Sound Pillow is a work that consists of pillows with built-in loudspeakers, featuring sonificated recordings of sunlight. The sound pillow allows the visitor to relax for a moment on a couch while listening. I made the Sunlight recordings for these sound pillows in ArToll in Bedburg-Hau on February 7 2004 at 12.30am. It was a rather stormy weekend with a full moon (0,25 lux) on the night of February 6. I worked with twelve square wave generators each equipped with a light sensor. I placed contact microphones on the inside part of the window frame to make the recording. I tuned the sound generators intuitively.

Geluidsopname van de installatie Bleu de Travail die bestuurd wordt door een eenvoudig overvloeisysteem voor diaprojectoren met handmatig geplaatste pulsen op een audiocassette. De maat van de pulsen verloopt sneller dan de projectoren mechanisch aankunnen. Dit zorgt voor onregelmatigheden die de normale volgorde verstoren. De ruis van de ventilator en het transportmechanisme van de diaprojectoren krijgen de bovenhand. De dia’s wisselen sneller dan het beeld kan worden weergegeven, er ontstaat een aleatorische compositie. De lichtintensiteiten worden omgezet in geluidsgolven. Bleu de travail werd in 1994 geremastered voor een computergestuurde diaprojectie.

The composition of the piece is based upon the light-situation in May 1994. The form undergoes a kind of photomorphosis as with plants, changes of shape and construction are induced by light.

HH was recorded in Hamburg during August 2001. The mapping-vehicle was a Citroen Berlingo. Six sensors, photoelectrical resistors, were attached to the wind shield, the side and rear windows inside of the vehicle. In HH one not only hears a translation of the light, but also an additional sound recording made with two directional microphones.
The sound is a translation of the light intensities of different locations in the city. You hear a mix of high and low pitched square waves, the sun at noon on the Kölbrandbrücke and the full moon at night. The electronic sound blends with the ambient sounds.
The research for HH was made possible by the centre for acoustic art Spritzenhaus in Hamburg (G). Supported by the city of Hamburg and the Flemish authorities.

Sound fragment from a one hour recording of a sonic light interactive installation and its environment during a total solar eclipse. The eclipse was visible in Stuttgart on 11 August 1999 from 11:12 am until 1:30 pm. The installation was set-up on a cemetery near Stuttgart. It rained most of the time. The result is a dense sound composed by twelve square waves that were synchronous with the gradual occlusion of the sun by the moon going down in pitch and rising again. In the one-hour cycle after 25 minutes the light intensity is about 60 %. Then the light gets dimmer faster and faster, down to 5 %, and remains for about 2'17". Afterwards the light fades in again in a similar but reverse tempo over 30 minutes.

Wachtsoniek: A Sunny day

‘De Kortste Dag’ van Maria Blondeel is een soundscape met het weer in Limburg. De compositie is een artistieke interpretatie van de weerkaarten van die dag. Lichtere tonen van de opkomende zon verdrijven de lage, trage klanken van de nacht. Het tonen en tunen van de beweging van de wind, de wolken en het landschap verrijken het klankbeeld. Door de digitale weerkaarten artistiek te interpreteren, verkreeg Maria Blondeel een waaier aan toonnuances. Met dank aan het Koninklijk Meteorologisch Instituut (KMI).
