A song I wrote for my son Matthew when he was just a few months old. Today in 2022, is his 27th birthday, so I wanted to share it. I love you Matthew. You bring music to my life!

Forward to the dream

During the hurricane around 7 pm we lost power. We were lucky and only lost it for 27 hours. During that night when it was eerily quiet outside and all I kept seeing were flashes of red and blue (transformers that were blowing up) I sat by myself long after everyone went up to their beds. I just couldn't sleep with all the uncertainty. I had a fully charged ipad and began noodling in PPG Wavegenerator with a recently modified preset that I made using the YRG You Rock Guitar Midi Controller. It was the first time I used this midi controller with PPG and it worked perfectly!  Then I played along to that with a new downloaded sound bank by Nahuel Mijal.(very cool analog type sounds!) Of course I turned to my favorite drum synth Drum Jam for the percussion. The parts were put into Garageband for exporting as it has limited mixing but it's we have now! This song was born in those hours. 
This truly was a scary night and the ipad and ppg and the YRG you rock guitar kept me occupied comforted and peaceful in a less then peaceful time. Since I had no wifi I had to wait to upload it..so here it is....

"Song in a Time of Depression" is from Tim Keyes's: Symphony in C: The Earth Whispers –  A Song of Native North American Peoples. 

"The inspiration for this symphony comes from the Indigenous people of North America.  This large scale work has been composed as a collection of ‘songs’ that aim to honor the traditions, beliefs, and aspirations of America’s Native Peoples. 
 
"The composition is the result of years of research and discovery of the songs and sounds created by North American tribes. The sound world of the Native Americans consists of vocal chanting, the 5 hole flute (pentatonic scale), and various percussion instruments (Rattles, drums, etc.).  Symphony in C does not strive to imitate the stereotypical sound of Hollywood movies from the 1930’s to the 1950’s.  In creating this work it was my goal to imbed elements of the native sound world into an orchestral fabric in such a way as to create a sophisticated blend of new textures.  
 
"The texts in Symphony in C come from various sources.  Some are in translation, some are from English speaking Natives, and some are original, assembled from various Native writings.  Each movement pays homage to important aspects of the Native’s life: Love, Loss, Wonder, and Praise.
 
"It is my hope that this composition will enlighten and inspire a greater respect for those people who are the first great Americans."

About Maria Calfa-DePaul: Singer/Songwriter Maria Calfa-DePaul spent her childhood in Brooklyn and then Suffern, NY where she currently resides with her husband and two  sons. Her interest in musical performance began in college where she minored in music and continued into her early thirties when she worked as a Wandering Minstrel. 
 In 1997 she developed a cyst on her vocal cords which made it impossible for her to continue singing but her passion for songwriting never diminished. Thanks to successful vocal cord surgery in September 2005 and subsequent speech therapy Maria is once again able to perform. Maria entertains at various venues in Rockland and Westchester Counties. Her self produced CD “Moments Of Happiness” contains 10 original songs and is available at cdbaby and iTunes.  Recently, Maria was honored with having one of her songs: Silent Prayer place in the top 5 songs for the spiritual/gospel category in the International “Song of the Year Contest” a sponsor of VH1 Saves the Music. Being given a second chance to entertain is a fulfillment of a life long dream for this grateful singer/songwriter.
