Recorded in 2010 on a Yamaha keyboard with various vsti synthesizers in Formby and Oxford Uk.

‘The Song of a Girl Ravished away by the Fairies in South Uist' by Judith Weir 
The Song Cycle; 'Songs from the Exotic', where this songs comes from, was written for the singer Josephine Nendick who gave a series of farewell recitals in 1987 before settling in France. She was accompanied by the composer/pianist Michael Finnissy.
This traditional Scottish-Gaelic folksong is set in a very engaging manner. The accompaniment  at first merely enhances and amplifies important notes in the vocal melody, as if strumming a stringed folk instrument.
A young girl pleads with the water-horse to return her to her mother. She met this mythological creature, common in the Gaelic tradition, at the edge of the cattle fold and now begs him to return her as she was.

When I recently asked Judith Weir about this song, she said: “The period of composition is now almost exactly thirty years ago, and I can’t really recall much more detail. This was a time when I was generally interested in creating my own music from folksong  originals - an inspiration for this was the music of Michael Finnissy, who played the piano in the first performances of Songs from the Exotic. As a great Finnissy fan myself, Yes, with Michael F on the piano - writing for him was very much part of the inspiration for this piece.”.

Judith Weir studied with John Taverner amongst others and is the first woman to hold the title 'Master of the Queen's Music', she succeeded the Late Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in 2014.  
Judith Weir is one of our most original British contemporary composers, with her freshness of ideas. Her concern to tell stories, her ability to distill musical and dramatic ideas to their essences, and her creation of an idiom that's full of expressive subtlety but is never anything less than richly communicative.
