Marie Conniffe returns with a musical call-to-arms to enjoy the summer months and make the most out of life. Her latest song “Down to the River to Play” is a 90s-infused anthem brimming with positivity and good vibes. In the title of the song, a nod to the harmonic influences of the “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack in her own musical life, Conniffe invites us to go “down to the river to play in the hay”. It’s a catchy, fun-filled number that is well-served by the hypnotic blend of Conniffe’s vocal harmonies and uplifting message. 

The song was recorded at Beardfire Music in Dublin 4 with brothers, Rohan Healy and Al Quiff, and their dad, David Virgin. 

“Down to the River to Play” goes live on all platforms at midnight, Friday, 10th June 2022.

I wrote this song after watching a  "Fíorscéal" documentary on TG4 called "Justice for my Sister". This documentary tells the story of the murder of Adela Chacón Tax and her sister's campaign to bring her killer to justice, while also highlighting the appalling rates of femicide and violence against women in Guatemala.

It is a song of hope and an appeal to all men to help stop these horrors from occurring.

To Want Without Love (For Adela, My Sister)

I tried about 5 times, but between the harmonica and the singing, I always ended up with a frog in my throat! So, please excuse the cough - it was either that or croak my way through the whole song!

The song is an incredibly catchy, energy-filled ball of fun.

When I was writing the song, lyrically, I tried to strike a balance between the more universal, relatable aspects of Christmas and then there are some traditions that are much more unique to the Conniffe household! For example, the line about the three wise men on their way to the crib - in the story of the nativity, they are not supposed to arrive until January 6th so, for that reason, they need to begin their journey in the next room and then the Conniffe family as a team help them on their way over the Christmas period so that they arrive on time. I get the feeling that not everybody does that :)
