MazeDK is a queer Polish DJ who moved to Berlin in the midst of the pandemic after years of living in London. She grew up listening to underground punk, ebm and industrial.
This musical upbringing heavily influenced the type of techno she plays – fast, hard, relentless. Yet her sets centre on emotional messages and in each of them she creates a dark and exciting journey to follow.

INTERVIEW:
1. How long have you been DJing and how did you learn it?

Maze DK: Well this is actually a question which may need some longer answer. In practice I've been DJing seriously since the end of 2020. I moved to Berlin during the pandemic and the first lockdown in April 2020 so I found myself in a new city with a lot of free time. With some encouragement from my friends I got my first Traktor controller and I learnt all by myself and mostly with free online resources, asking some friends about some bits and bobs, how to use it. My first attempt was to become a DJ in the mid 2000s when with a group of friends in Poland, we organised wave/ebm/goth nights. Unfortunately due to my mental health state and a non-supporting environment in Poland (for a queer FLINTA person), I gave up this dream for around 15 years.

2. Is there any specific event or moment that you like to think back on?

M: I think it would be the first time I played on a proper sound system (since restarting djing), it was last year in Mensch Meier for my friend’s event - Dynamic Events. I was so stressed when I started but at some point I realised that people are just enjoying themselves and having fun so all that anxiety faded. Additionally it was so great to remind myself how rewarding it is to play for a public crowd.

3. What would you like to see happen differently (or .anders) in the club scene?

M: I just wish that especially the techno scene remembered and cherished more strongly the roots where it comes from which are underground, radical, black and queer. Diversity is what makes creative spaces interesting. I think that initiatives like .anders are already supporting this by bringing more FLINTA* artists into the spotlight.

4. How would you describe your style of music?

M: I grew up in an industrial city in central Poland, listening to underground punk, ebm and industrial. This musical upbringing heavily influenced the type of techno I play – fast, hard and relentless. I like to create an industrial soundscape for my sets but prefer when the tracks have strong leading melodies or acid lines which allow me to create emotional journeys for the listeners and dancers. I also try not to take my sets and track selection too seriously so I don’t shy from silliness when I play. 

5. What else is really important to you besides DJing?

M: My friends and chosen family, political causes which I care about. The fight against patriarchy and capitalism :) 

6. If you were a word what would it be?

M: I’m pisces with my whole heart so I guess it would be: emotions

7. Making Music means to you…?

M: Because of the complicated story on how I started my journey as a DJ and me not being able to connect with such an important part of my life for so long, making music is now the most important part of how I can express myself. I have those strange feelings of finding something lost for so long or like reconnecting to an old and missed friend.

8. Do you have specific plans and goals you want to tell us about?

M: I’m starting a new FLINTA* dj collective called Crush Kollektiv. You will hear about us soon. Additionally I hope to be able to express more of my creativity via my music, play more live and participate in the local scene in Berlin when we are now out of lockdowns for at least some time (until next wave? hopefully not).
