Ce que l’arbre tait de lui-même, c’est d’abord une couleur, cette teinte terre-bois de la formation instrumentale.
J’ai besoin de construire le son de mes instruments pour pouvoir élaborer ensuite un discours musical. Le choix de la formation et de son idiome est donc le premier matériau de la musique, c’est ce qui fait d’abord concevoir le système de préparation, de composition, et le propos de la pièce. La formation de Ce que l’arbre tait de lui-même répond à la spécificité instrumentale de l’ensemble Cairn pour qui elle est écrite. Le zarb et les percussions sur la table de la guitare prolongent la famille des sons percussifs issus de la préparation du piano ; la deuxième famille regroupe des frappes molles de sons diphoniques, résonnants et détempérés, « clochifié » par la patafix placée sur les cordes, et trouvent une extension dans les deux instruments à cordes pincées : la scordatura microtonale de la guitare et les pizz de violoncelle permettant un jeu de doublures ou de complémentarités plus ou moins exactes. Ces jeux d’accord et d’écriture ont pour but de créer une sorte de steel-drum en cordes, décomposé, contrepointant les nuances d’une palette de sons percussifs. Le jeu du violoncelle avec archet s’en échappe, transformant les résonances en figures vocales.

Ce que l’arbre tait de lui-même explore ainsi un territoire sonore et ses déclinaisons, ses genres, ses caractères, à l’intérieur d’une formation. 
Le mouvement général est celui d’une appropriation progressive de tout l’espace des notes, des timbres, des figures — parcours avec des crêtes et des creux.
La charpente est formée de pôles et d’accords déduits des potentialités harmoniques des préparations de guitare et de piano. Sur celle-ci se déploie un parcours du genre de la Fantaisie : des éléments se développement, se transforment en d’autres, reviennent, ou forment momentanément un tableau presque indépendant du mouvement général. La Fantaisie, c’est l’exploration libre et obstinée d’un territoire.

Dans mon parcours de compositeur, Ce que l’arbre tait de lui-même est une étape de cet approfondissement de l’accord entre matériau et idiome, de la synthèse des instruments entre eux, d’un traitement orchestral de l’écriture de musique de chambre.

Enfin, Ce que l’arbre tait de lui-même, c’est peut-être cette façon de se manifester par le frémissement, ce déploiement patient dans l’espace qui est la vie même d’un arbre, cette sève têtue, la dignité un peu raide qui pourtant écoute toujours le vent, ou l’espoir d’être la halte d’une promenade ou l’aire de jeu des enfants.

The rich overtone harmonies produced from subtly interlocked multiphonics dominate the trio klangNarbe (‘sound-scar’) for baritone saxophone, percussion and prepared piano (2014-15), a jagged soundscape whose topography is subject to constant erosion. The metallic timbres and noise spectra of a multi-coloured percussion section (frequently played with bows) are combined with multiphonics from the saxophone and the sounds of a prepared piano, which sometimes pro- duces 17-tone multiphonic clusters. The pianist also plays inside the instrument, producing sharp accents or glissandos with a hard plectrum or generating mi- crotonal cluster-surfaces with a double-bass bow. Here the tension between con- tinuum and event – between stationary surface and sharply etched crosshatching within multi-dimensional overlaps of sonic foregrounds and backgrounds – is typical of Khorkova’s music and assumes especially trenchant forms. The contrasts in the piece are its programme: ‘klangNarbe plays with the contradiction between contrasting compositional materials that are considered irreconcilable and yet are combined in the manner of a mosaic. I create bridges across the lines of frac- ture in this material, bridges visible as scars. The term sound-scars also applies to the work’s genesis, which extended over a very long period of time and was fraught with upheavals.’
The block-like events, separated by distinct gaps, give rise to violent outbursts and accentuations: harsh cluster hammerblows, drinking glasses scraped on thun- der-sheets, roaring glissandi as the saxophonist yells into the instrument. No scar without a previous wound...

Marina Khorkova studied composition at the National Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. After her academic work, she received fellowships from the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, and the German Academic Exchange Service, to continue her research at the State Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, Germany. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, among them from the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation, the Lieselotte Klein Foundation Berlin, and the Arts Foundation of Baden-Wuerttemberg. In 2011 she was awarded the DAAD’s Prize for Outstanding Artistic Achievement, and the Ernst-Krenek Prize from Impuls 2011, in addition to a commission for a new work for Klangforum Wien. &#13;
Khorkova’s works have been performed worldwide, by such ensembles as the Klangforum Wien, Thürmchen Ensemble and Ensemble Handwerk (Cologne), camerata variabile Basel, Ensemble Ascolta (Stuttgart), Kairos Quartet and Ensemble LUX:NM (Berlin), the Vinca Quartet (USA), Lyris Quartet (Los Angeles), Ensemble Nostri Temporis (Kiev), Trio Accanto (Freiburg), Archos Qaurtett (Poland), the Studio for New Music, the Mark Pekarsky Percussion Ensemble, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Russian Federation, and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (Moscow).&#13;
Her works have been premiered at numerous festivals, most recently the musikprotokoll series with Klangforum Wien at the Steirische Herbst Festival 2012 (Graz), but also the Wittener Tage fuer neue Kammermusik 2012, Darmstädter Ferienkurse 2014 (Staubach Honoraria Preis), Unerhörte Musik im BKA (Berlin), the tonArt-Festival (Esslingen), at the International Conference “Micronality. Praxis and Utopia” (Stuttgart), The New Music Triduum (Krakow), IN-BETWEEN Berlin  St. Petersburg, the Multimediales Festival “Sinfonie der Bilder” (Stuttgart), a double portrait concert as part of the “frau musica (nova)” series presented by Deutschlandfunk (Cologne), the project “Musikalische Lyrik – Das Lied als Experiment” in cooperation with the Neuen Vokalsolisten Stuttgart, and the “Moscow Autumn” festival of new music. Her works have been broadcast by numerous national radio services, including WDR 3 and ORF.&#13;
Marina Khorkova has also given numerous lectures and demonstrations of her research and works, and has been invited as artist-in-residence to numerous institutions, among them at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory Moscow, the Music Academy Basel, and the Academy of Music Krakow.
