This song uses what Emmylou Harris calls "Canadian tuning" - EAEAAE - so I thought I'd better write a song with a Canadian theme. What emerged was a song about climbing Silver Mountain in Ontario's stunning Killarney Park. It has a bit of a Gord Lightfoot influence, which makes it even more Canadian, eh?

The title refers to the drug NZT-48, from the movie Limitless (2011).

There are lots of influences in the intro. The dystopian metallic beat is based on the wooden drums heard in Kaneda's Theme from the anime Akira. Also some of the voices that appear in the background are samples from the opening theme of the anime Ghost in the Shell. And the harmony of the intro and even the interruption before the brutal guitar attack were clearly inspired by the the song "Altered State" of the Brazilian metal band Sepultura.

Besides the intro, the song itself has several influences. The first part is inspired by the spectacular song Tikal of the group E. S. Posthumus. Also several parts are deeply inspired by tracks from Sigue Sigue Sputnik's excellent album Piratespace. And the third act is influenced by NIN in the good old days.

I really recommend you check out each of these influences mentioned here -- it's excellent material.
