Walyalup selector Monty holds this week's Shell Tape in her hands and we couldn't be happier. The mix conjures up a raft of emotions. Moments in time, caught in the mirror of a mind and beamed back to us, warped by time and memory. A smile from a friend while preparing dinner, housemates’ laughs bounding down a hallway, the crisp sheen of a beer can discarded next to a picnic rug. 

“Reflections In A Rear View Mirror” captures such moments in the slim space of an hour - thoughts carried along by warm percussion, untethered synth tones and buoyant bass lines. Tripping from ephemeral ambience to organic downtempo cuts and life affirming house selections Tape 73 builds its own world - one where time stands still while the extra bits keep on spinning.

Rare Groove Records (Japan) is a prized and treasured record store situated amongst a mind blowing number of fellow music stores, would you know it, classed into one of the highest record store densities on the globe. In an already declining traditional commerce where brick & mortar stores face sky high rent hikes, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to simply make a living as a music retailer, however, this particular store has withstood the test of time. With some perseverance, a vigorous dedication to hospitality, and intriguing selections, Rare Groove has become part of the record pilgrimage route for vinyl lovers visiting Japan.

Owner and operator of Rare Groove, Norio Sato, has graciously presented us with the next instalment of the series. Having a wealth of knowledge in musical genres from ambient, jazz, city pop, to disco ((Check his recent compilation 4 Music from Memory’s release 'Heisei No Oto')), theres no denying this man has the ability to transcend the listener into higher realms. Who knew Dusty Springfields (Marshall Jefferson) remix could  fuse itself so beautifully onto Morgan Fisher’s ambient masterpiece “Ice Melting”. What a tease! The rest of the mix defines itself beyond limits and boundaries.

Hey friends. Summer is still in full swing (in Germany it’s a bit of a rainy swing so far) and that calls for a fitting Messy Mix. And for the 27th episode I got a true expert on board when it comes to laidback sunny tunes - Christian Beetz from Hamburg, better known in the Soundcloud-verse as @frwctrl (“frequency without control”). He’s been around the scene since the 90s, working as DJ, music blogger and passionate record collector. Right now he’s regularly throwing a “Baleraric Disco Yachtride” boat party in Hamburg and that definitely sounds like an event I should catch whenever I’m in town the next time.

Since Christian’s Soundcloud is loaded with hundreds of delightful mixes for various moods, his involvement in the MESSY MIX series has been a longtime wish of mine. Of course, his hour of selected sounds comes with a summer theme and became a musical tribute to the special lighting conditions on Fuerteventura throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. “I have spent my summer holidays on this island over the last 10 years in a row and I was there for the first time back in the early 80’s,” Christian explains. “The special lighting conditions on the island fascinate me since the first time, so I tried to capture the individual light situations throughout the day in a mix.” 

The result is a selection that starts smooth and relaxing but gains a bit speed throughout its run. Truly a great after hour soundtrack or one for hot summer days. Let me just say, it also works extremely well if you don’t happen to stay onFuerteventura. The set is now up and running on the Messy Mix Soundcloud page. Tina Marie is a multidisciplinary creative with roots in Cameroon and Madagascar. She was raised in Canada, and currently resides in Zurich, Switzerland. She flows through music genres like she does with her soul projects, blurring boundaries with surprising twists—composing a colorful selection of sounds.

Tina Marie first started playing at Kasheme in 2021 with roots digging deep into old school hip hop and soul & jazz. Over the years she’s blossomed and continues to grow and explore other genres — from  Afro-funk to disco and everything in between. Inspired by fellow Cameroonian legends — Manu Dibango and Francis Bebey, she pays tribute to her roots sprinkled throughout her eclectic sets.

As a resident on Planet Kasheme, she takes her listeners on a musical journey through space and time, using her emotions as inspiration to provoke her listeners to connect deeper with the music, and more importantly, with themselves. Music therefore becomes a form of meditation and a medium for self discovery.
