We have selected the battles and incidents that, in our opinion, defined this era and the naval campaigns of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The grand set piece battles, despite popular opinion, were rare. Most sailors would not have been a part of these monumental episodes in nautical history. Individual ship actions or relentless blockade duty with its endless tedium were far more common. 

We have also chosen to highlight four famous mutinies to dispel the myths that surround this drastic course of action. The choices are of course dominated by Nelson and will hopefully begin to explain the truth behind his legendary status, one that was achieved within his own lifetime and one that he nurtured and relished.
